I need a therapist (social worker, psychologist) for myself (mom) of a special needs child. I have seen other therapists before but would like to connect with one who has a lot of experience counseling parents of special needs children to deal with the stress and anxiety of raising a special needs child and the long term stresses and implications.
NoVA recs please unless someone FABULOUS in MD or DC. Thanks so much! |

I know you requested a therapist but have you considered a support group? Where my son was diagnosed I met other moms who had the same struggles. The ages of their children ranged from toddlers to teenagers. They were a wealth of invaluable information and advice. It was also comforting to know I wasn't the only one struggling, others were in the same boat. We can make recommendations depending on where you live. |
can you suggest a group for parents in the Bethesda/CC/Silver Spring area? My 6 y.o. child has physical disabilities. |
NP here. I know JSSA (Jewish social services agency) often offers support groups for all-you don't have to be Jewish. There is one in Rockville I think. Your local hospital may also offer a support group. Some churches and synagogues do as well. Hope that helps! |
To add to PP, Mclean Bible Church has a special needs ministries that offer support groups, respite care and educational seminars. They are going to host an Accessibility Summit that covers a range of topics. Child care is provided if you want to attend.

I affirm 18:37's point about McLean Bible Church. I don't attend there but they have made it a point to reach out and service the needs of the special needs community, both through sunday services and the establishment of Jill's House, to give parents of SN children a much needed rest. |
I wanted to revive this post in the hopes of finding a recommendation for someone in DC (ideally Capitol Hill area). I have a good support group but would like some individual counseling on how to cope with the daily stress and grief that can add up in the long term. |
Bump and I’m also located in DC and looking for recommendations for counseling for a parent with SN kid. |
