Summer camps, why are they sooooo expensive?

Anonymous
How do working parents do it? I'm looking at summer camps for my 7 and 4 year old and the prices are scaring the heebie-jeebies out of me.

Look for cheaper ones through the County Parks and Rec. If you want to do camps all summer, pick one or two more expensive ones and then use the cheaper ones for the other weeks.

It's not that I want to -- it is more of a necessity since we both work.

Thanks for the tip.

Some programs offer assistance to defer the cost - you can always ask!

You could also take your vacation one week and your husband could do another week. I don't know how much vacation you get. That would be fun. Also, check around your area to see is any SAHMs or nannies want to take up another week here or there. I am a SAHM w/ an only child and that is something I would do. Good luck.

I know! I'm hoping with the economy going bust there will be a lot college kids looking for jobs as summer nannies...

I was a nanny every summer before, during and after college. I loved jobs where kids belonged to a pool so spend that extra $100 on a babysitter pass if you belong to a pool.
