Hello,
My 5 yr old is on spring break. All I have is $300 extra that I saved for his vacation. Where can I go? Stay cation? Day trip? |
| Baltimore Aquarium, National Zoo, Annapolis. Sounds like fun! |
| We're headed to the beach for a couple nights. <$200 for 2 nights after taxes, at a place w/ indoor pools. Planning to wander around the beach, swim, check out some parks. |
|
Do you have a car?
Trip 1: Baltimore Drive to B'more -- day 1, Port Discovery ($14.50 per person = $29) Stay overnight near BWI (La Quinta Inn is $105 plus tax, includes breakfast and has a pool = S119) day 2: Maryland Science Center ($18.95 + $15.95 = $34.95) Budget $50 for gas, parking tolls; you'll have about $70 left over for meals/incidentals. |
I like this idea, but I'd go on Priceline and get a nicer hotel for less, maybe one with a pool. But only if your kid really likes to stay in hotels and would get a kick out of it. If not I'd drive back home. |
|
Trip 2: Philly
Stay at Holiday Inn Express Penn's Landing ($119 + tax = $137 -- altho that's a non-refundable rate, so ymmv). Includes breakfast, no pool, though day 1: please touch museum: $17 pp = $34 day 2: franklin institute: ($19.95 + $15.95 = $35.95) That leaves you with $93 for gas/food/incidentals. |

You can allow yourself to be suckered into a timeshare if you can put up with a 2 hr sales pitch...the tradeoff being Uber cheap lodging/gift cards.
Massanutten has on going timeshares with the "prize" being the water park, but the resort is actually really nice alone. Quick and easy drive too. Also, a children's museum in downtown Harrisonburg. |

OP, I love the Baltimore idea. Stay at the Fairfield Inn & Suites - Baltimore Inner Harbor and you'll be right across the street from Port Discovery, so you can just walk there.
We stayed there this past January and paid about $120 for one night. The hotel is green/eco-friendly, and it's fairly new. The rooms are small, but cozy and super clean b/c of the hotel's newness. You can save a bit on breakfast too because it comes with your room fee. Breakfast = fruit, bagels, yogurt, muffins, cereal, milk, juice. Have fun! |
| I'm so touched by your post OP. Something sincere, sweet and humbling about it. |

These are amazing ideas! Thank you!!i will
Look into all of them. |
| The Richmond Science Museum and Children's Museum are right next door to each other and very fun for kids. |

Overnight at the beach if it is warm, See the ponies, look for shells, Memorial Park playground, indoor pool, affordable motels http://www.chincoteague.com/
daytrip Massanutten waterpark http://www.massresort.com/v.php?pg=30 stay in Harrisonburg if you want to explore the mountains There's a run little indoor waterpark (tot slides, big slide, lazy river) at Cub Run Rec Center if you want closer in hiking - lots of state park options, I recommend Cunningham Falls, Westmoreland State Park if it is warm Baltimore and the aquarium, dinner in Little Italy |

Most 5 year olds like animals, water parks, indoor climbing or bouncy stuff, hikes...how about Natural Bridge area?

| Dutch Wonderland + Strasburg train (if that's an interest) + Hershey choc tour (kids went on it 3x, then pigged out on the samples and store). Topped it off with Turkey Hill ice cream tour which was fun 1x. |
how much time can you take off, op? if we are talking a full week, i'd do a staycation - 5 yr olds don't see a difference between the national zoo and going to philly to that zoo i'd plan an activity a day - ideas-- indoor pool, movies, monster mini golf, zoo, smithsonian museums, great falls. You will have a little more wiggle room with your cash by not paying for a hotel and road trip gas, so you can treat to things like an ice cream, a stuffed animal at the zoo gift shop. have fun - we have had some great staycations - we always shake it up, breakfast for dinner, faux camping in the living room, breakfast in bed, etc.
