Jeff,
Most importantly, thank you so much for providing this forum. I was just reading the TTC forum, including the string on SGF's child-free waiting room and then on a person seeking advice for consoling a friend who has found out she's infertile. I notices that the ads (at least two -- Sitter City, I believe) have an adorable baby face on them, which in light of the SGF string I thought might be jarring from many of this forum's readers. I'm assuming that you may not have any ability to filter or otherwise select or block adds (or that you may have very good reasons not to want to), but I wanted to mention that seeing these ads may be had for people who are TTC. I recognize that your readers have chosen to log on to this site, and that one should perhaps expect to see baby photos here, but I thought I'd mention it. |
Thanks for this post. One benefit I get from administering this website is a wide exposure to different perspectives. I'm always amazed at how oblivious I am to so many things. I would have never thought of the point you raise. This is a very valid issue and I thank you for bringing it to my attention. That said, I don't have much in the way for a solution. The advertisements are all provided by Google Adsense. I can block individual ads or advertisers. However, the advertisers that are potentially unwanted in this specific situation are generally desired on the website as a whole. Because the website is template driven (meaning every forum page has the same underlying design), I can't exempt just one forum from the advertisements or specific advertisers. While I generally am not supportive of ad blocking software (the bills do have to be paid, after all), I think that ad blocking might be the best solution in this limited case. So, if there are users who would be upset by the children's pictures, please use ad-blocking software. I will be happy to provide guidance as to how to do that.
