So I am due with #2 very soon, looking forward to some good reading/nursing sessions. I will describe myself and place my Kindle orders at the mercy of dcum.
I like historical fiction as long as it is reasonably WELL WRITTEN and not overly romance-y, although some is nice . Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth and century trilogy, the first 4 books of the Clan of the Cave Bear series, Kate Mosse, etc.
I like mystery/horror-ish but no zombies or teenage vampires, although I did enjoy The Historian. Think Dean Koontz and some, only some, Stephen King. I liked the two Dan Brown books that weren't religious-based. Whoever writes the Alex Cross novels... I made it through the first 6 pages of one andxwanted to throw up in disgust. I really love the original Sherlock Holmes story collections. Andres Dubus (Jr, not III) -- F Scott Fitzgerald -- Carol Shields I like short stories, full length fiction, and very select nonfiction (Jared diamond, Anthony Bourdain, Michael Pollan). I do not like sci-fi. Kid-wise, i liked Nutureshock and have "How to talk so kids will listen and blah blah blah" on the list. I am a big re-reader. So this is quite the mixed bag... Any suggestions? |

I just read Tom Perrotta's book of short stories and loved it. Nine Inches. I'm a big fan of all his stuff.
I liked Mindy Kaling's book, Amy Poehler's book, and Tina Fey's book. |
| PP here. I also really loved Ann Patchett's This is the Story of a Happy Marriage, which is a collection of her nonfiction work. |

I wonder if you might like some historical British detective series? I'm thinking specially of the Anne Perry series (Thomas Pitt).
Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling) Cormoran Strike series is good. Ordinary Grace - William Kent Krueger I would recommend all three Gillian Flynn mysteries. SJ Bolton writes some page turned mysteries Fortune's Rocks - Anita Shreve, I also liked Stella Bain Where's you go Bernadette- Maria Semple Because you'll be tired woth a new baby I tried to suggest books that keep the pages turning. Not high literature, but well written and easy to get through. Congratulations on your new little one. |

+1 sooooo good and suspenseful! |
Based on what you like, i would second Fortune's Rock and Sea Glass (one of my all time faves, read entirely while nursing both by Anita Shreve.
Also Children and Fire by Ursula Hegi. |

Short stories: Alice Munro, Edith Pearlman (who has a new one out), Richard Ford. Fiction: I loved State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. Also Michael Chabon -- Yiddish Policemen's Union and Telegraph Avenue. Also found The Goldfinch to be a real page-turner, as well as Station Eleven (a post-apocalyptic book - not my usual thing, but it was beautifully written and very suspenseful). Historical fiction: Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel. |

Not to self-promote, but I think you would like my book! It's got a lot of historical detail -- there's romance but it's not a bodice ripper. Here's a link:

| Deborah Harkness's series All Souls trilogy (starting with A Discovery of Witches) has ALL that you require. You will love it based on your requirements. |
| Not the deepest books, but I'm a guy and my wife got me hooked on the Sue Grafton alphabet murder mysteries (Kinsey Millhone). Easy reads, rather gripping, but not overly deep. The early books are harder to find, but you can find them on-line in various forms. And most libraries carry at least the latest 5-10 (W just came out in 2013, so only 3 left to come). |
| OP here... You guys rock. Will be loading up the kindle for sure! Thanks fir all the suggestions |

Patricia Cornwell!
Her books about medical examiner Kay Scarpetta - takes place in Richmond. http://www.patriciacornwell.com/books/catalog/scarpetta-series/ |
+1 Fantastic book! The essays cover so many different topics, and they're all so well-written and interesting. I also loved how clearly the author's voice came through. Great read. I also really liked Visit From the Goon Squad, by Jennifer Egan. It's a novel comprised of linked short stories. They seem very different and each can stand alone, but they are connected through various characters and definitely by theme, as well. I'm sure it's a book I'll re-read over time. Entertaining with lots of depth. For a total laugh, you might want to try Spoiled Brats, by Simon Rich. They're short stories, and the best of the bunch are biting and truly hilarious. |

Hangman, by Faye Kellerman.
She's wife to Jonathan Kellerman (his books are good too). Faye writes a whole series with the Donatti/Whitman men, that I LOVE. |
