Does University of Michigan live up to the hype?

OF COURSE if you live in Michigan it’s a steal to go to Umich at the cheap resident rate. But is it worth over $70k a year to rich kids who can go anywhere? No, it’s frankly not. These TikTok rich teens crave warm weather and/or bustling big cities. Ann Arbor is a freezing cold backwater.

Just because it's a big school, doesn't mean its's overcrowded, whatever that means.

The reason you would go to Michigan is because it's one of the best schools in the country, with many different academic programs that appeal to a wide variety of students. You know, to get an education? And, honestly, the type of rich kids who make their university decisions based on TikTok videos don't really have the academic chops to make it into Michigan. Arizona State is more their speed, academically.

Smart but not brilliant rich kids looking at Michigan can afford Michigan and any sporty party college in the same tier including USC, UCSD, UCSB, Vandy, Georgetown, GW, Georgia, Ole Miss, SMU, Texas, Florida, UNC, UVa, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Miami, Colorado, NYU, LSU.

My kid has a 1580 SAT and A- GPA. Varsity athlete etc…does he/she have a good chance? I am reading on here no if oos. Any input on getting in here or UVA? Which is harder if any?

Your kid has a strong chance at both (not saying it is a lock) if they apply EA in both cases.

Thank you. I keep hearing that the GPA may be too low?

Ivy vs overcrowded state school

East coast vs middle of nowhere flyover country

Because all of the East Coast is just so lovely. Last I looked, Ann Arbor is nicer than New Haven or Princeton, NJ. Get a clue, coastal snob wannabe.

You’re clearly a small minded Michigan lifer who’s never been anywhere. Googling random college towns doesn’t make you an expert on anything.

By the same account, operating off of tired, lazy stereotypes of “flyover country” without ever leaving the DMV doesn’t make you an expert on anything either.

I do agree UM has better global branding than UMD or UVA. You can become a resident of the UK if you’ve attended certain universities, and UM is one of them.

UMD and UVA are great but they are just not widely viewed, especially internationally, as in the same public tier as Michigan (let alone UC Berkeley).

UVA is quite highly regarded but definitely above UMD not in same tier

That's quite a collection of different schools that, while having different strengths, generally would not be considered "in the same tier." You seem to be confusing logorrhea with insight.

When did UCSD, UCSB, GW, Georgia, Ole Miss, SMU, Florida, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Miami, Colorado, NYU, and LSU end up in the same tier as Michigan?

I never understood why they would pay OOS $$$.”

You grew up in Ohio. Their flagship is not on the same tier as Michigan. Neither is PSU or any other public B1G school currently. Academically Michigan undergrad is elite, despite what some naysayers will tell you here on DCUM. I can’t understand why anyone would pay OOS tuition for PSU if they were admitted to tOS either. That I can agree with.

Ugghh - a reminder of why the rest of the rest of the Big Ten hates Michigan. Northwestern ranks well above Michigan but somehow manages not to be arrogant about it.

Really? Not the Northwestern alums I've met.

Probably they are but Michigan grads / students are uniquely arrogant - like how do you get so high on being a clear #2 while showing no regard for other fine universities in the region like Wisconsin, Illinois etc.. The Skunks are an annoying bunch. You got to love the "Harvard of the Midwest".

+1 “Harvard of the Midwest” is one of the most obnoxious things I’ve heard alums say.

I know right? Everyone knows Harvard is the Michigan of the East!
