If you have a job that many on DCUM would take issue with...

The only jobs that I can think of that are really roundly vilified are sugar baby and NRA lobbyist.

Other than that, yeah, there are crazy people who will bash any profession. (Like look at the crazy posters on the fire fighter thread saying you can rescue yourself from a car crash and put out your own house fire. There's just some bonkers people posting here -- don't take it personally if they come after you. Unless you work for the NRA -- those folks are seriously just f--cked up.)

PS My dad was an NRA member dating from maybe the 1950s or 1960s -- he finally had to turn in his membership in the 90s because he decided they'd turned so crazy. He still has his guns, though. ANd isn't particularly worried about the liberals coming to pry them from him.

Eh.... Yes, probably, with some dumb insults etc thrown in. Wouldn't really weigh in on it here anyway because the position is pretty niche / specific to my industry.

Sometimes I can' resist responding to the posters who think we have cushy jobs, are overpaid, and are stupid with two simple questions: (1) if it is so easy why aren't you a real estate agent and (2) why did you select a bad agent to represent you

We hired a top agent for our last purchase and paid him well. So I support agents.

But I can answer (2):
People select bad agents because (a) it is very hard to tell who is a good or bad agent and (b) since everyone gets paid the same commission there is very little price signal on who is a good or bad agent for a given purchase.

Realtors could fix these things if they wanted to.

I don't post on threads about my experience as a nuclear physicist because I'm not a nuclear physicist. Why would someone without a job post on a thread asking about their job?

The amount of shit they are getting shows this was a legit response!

I’m a financial advisor.
There is a lot of horrible money and investing advice on this site. A lot of misinterpretation of federal rules. I generally try to stay out of Money entirely unless I’m having a day.
There are a lot of people lying about their income and savings on the site. My favorite is when there’s literally no mathematical way.
I’ve had people I know IRL tell me to my face that my job is worthless because they can out invest me, which is completely ignores that different people have different risk tolerances and putting an 80 y/o in the crypto that he was investing in would have me jailed.

I've been a teacher, a corporate lawyer, and a SAHM. The only one that made me feel like I was actively working to make the world a worse place was corporate lawyer, obviously. It's not that everything you do is terrible. The vast majority of it feels neutral, boring, and benign. That's what's insidious. But you're participating in this massive system where a bunch of people just push paper around in a circle so that everything worthwhile can be more expensive and be harder to access for most people, and a very tiny percentage of the population can live like kings. It's actually messed up.

I know lots of corporate lawyers and I don't judge them personally. I know how it happens and how you justify your work to yourself (and how nice the money is even as the hours and culture often suck). But it is so weird to see so many people on DCUM acting like teachers and SAHMs are these awful scourges of society when I know exactly what so many of you do for work and it's a net negative. Sorry.

I am a similar lawyer... transactional, real estate, and I feel absolutely nothing like this. I help people build, renovate, buy, sell, buildings. The world is a better place because of my efforts. I can specifically know this because a handful of shiny buildings in various areas went up quicker as a result of my efforts and I can look at them, but even the other stuff like helping someone sell a building to someone that wants it is useful.

Maybe you worked for the wrong corporations, or did work you found unsatisfying for them?

I’m a human doctor and most people also think I’m rich and that they know more than me! They will stand in the yard of our modest townhouse howling about the exorbitant salaries that doctors make. I particularly enjoy it when they make more than me (ahem, lawyers!) while working fairly normal hours from home during Covid.

I rarely look at and almost never comment on the health board. If I do comment, it’s because things have spun out of control and someone is getting horrific advice. This is surprisingly common. People in the DC area are so book smart, but many simply do not understand how the human body works, and run to the doctor for every little thing. Which is ironic because google is apparently smarter than doctors.

I will say that my friend who is a lawyer at homeland security gets way more grief than me. A few years ago, some of the people at the pool would get in his face and start yelling at him about kids in cages. That was uncomfortable.

DH works at a hedge fund. I don’t tell my colleagues (work at a non profit) and don’t often share here.

He’s a really ethical guy who gives generously of his time and our money.

Let’s just say all my environmental friends hate me right now because I frequent fracking sites for work.

Look, you people are doing God’s work. I have a relative that does R and D for a major university but her child went to a oharma company because the money for research just isn’t going to the universities the way it should. With Pfizer and moderna, we’d be up sh-t creek with no paddle now.
