They want to defund the police..... many jurisdictions are not doing this. Some are. But the actions they have taken have had the result they wanted.

They demonized the police. Called them racists. Attacked them relentless over the summer of 2020 - and attacks continue today. Police are being targeted and assassinated.

Now, police offices across the nation cannot get new recruits. There are record number of retirements and resignations from police departments. Police officers are afraid to do their job for fear they will be accused of a crime.

This was their goal. And, crime is skyrocketing. No surprises there.

It’s a win-win situation for libs, too. They hate cops, and they also hate people being able to own guns, too. So skyrocketing crime rates because of a lack of police also gives them a platform to demand further gun confiscation. So there’s no downsides to high crime rates as far as they’re concerned.

I've given up caring. The liberals don't even pretend to care about them and yet these people are dumb enough to keep voting liberal. Why the heck should the rest of us continue to care?

As long as they're just killing each other and not people in other cities who want a society with law and order.

Where I live (not DC) restaurants are unable to hire people due to low wages, so they’ve taken to posting on social media and posting signs *inside the restaurant itself* that government needs to abolish social services so people will be forced to work at $2.13 an hour.

Not surprisingly, it’s hurt their business. Which is probably good, since they don’t have any waitstaff anyway.

Where in god’s name is this awful biz?

Well, I cannot disagree with the factual base of your post. But what benefit would “liberals” (as you put it) derive from rising crime rates?

Liberals will benefit by demanding more social welfare government and private entities to address the issues. This will create jobs for liberals with little to no skills.

Better yet, they could be agents of change by becoming a police officer!

Anyone that thinks this is a Detroit problem is delusional. The LEO agencies around here are desperate to recruit and can’t fill their academy classes.
I think communities of color need to do a real recruitment effort to get the right kind of candidates into the academies. It would take a real mind shift and an effort by ministers, civil rights leaders, and other community leaders.

It’s the drug test stupid. Until LEOs relax requirements, it will be hard to get people. The Teamsters are pushing to allow truckers to drive if they use marijuana. Other trades are also eliminating drug tests.

They should outsource this job. I bet I can get enough people to take on policing jobs from my country and they would not even use guns and shoot people down.

You will need a constant flow of new recruits to replace the dead cops who won't "shoot people down."

OP, do you yourself have a low paying, high stress, high risk job? If not, then you likely understand what’s behind the “crisis”.

Yeah OP admonished us to read the article carefully but didn’t do that him/herself. First of all, it’s the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriffs Office, and clearly $36,000 per year is not going to cut it. That’s embarrassing.

That’s crazy low. I have several family members who are LEOs in other states who make a decent living, especially with overtime. I get that people don’t want to pay more in taxes but geesh. Services won’t be there when people need them.

It’s immature to call someone stupid. But putting that aside, you’re right that the drug screening questions are problematic, as are some of the other screening questions mentioned above. But, in addition, raises have not kept place with inflation, most jurisdictions have started cutting back on the pensions, and the risk really has increased as more criminals own more guns that have higher fire power. It’s not like the 80s and 90s. The Supreme Court has limited what we can do with gun control, but we can raise pay, loosen up some of the requirements relating to past recreational drug/alcohol use, and get communities of color involved in trying to recruit law enforcement officers. I agree with many of the reform initiatives but I think they need to be combined with these efforts as well or the only people joining the force will be the ones jonesing for a gun and a badge.

Even better, we need universal healthcare. Let’s promote entrepreneurship and risk taking without the fear of getting sick and losing everything.

I’m interested to see how this Great Resignation will pan out. I hope that workers become more powerful and less beholden to the Almighty Employer.

Nope. We need a world where people who create jobs get tax breaks or, alternatively we automate everything. Ever hear the expression “if you want to get something done, ask a busy person to do it?” Sake here. You want a great economy (and high I do) get the doers doing.

All the BLM folks screaming for police reform, here is your chance to step up and really do some good.
