Just finished episode 1 of season 4. Disturbing stuff! I am a little confused on a few points but will see how episode 2 shakes out.

I’m pretty meh on the first three eps, hope it improves.

I watched the first three episodes last night.

**Spoilers follow**

My primary walkaway was, WTF with June and Nick? Is she playing the long game with him- trying to keep him in love with her so that he will be disposed to help her in bigger ways? Or does she know or think that HE is playing the long game and is going to blow up Gilead, in a way that the viewer doesn’t? If I were June I wouldn’t be ok with him pulling strings to keep me alive while looking the other way while innocent people are pushed off of buildings and shot in the streets.

Also, who impregnated Serena?

First off, I love Janine. How has she not won awards for this role yet? She’s brilliant.

Second, I really hate Nick. Put your big boy pants on and do something already!

Third, I hope Serena rots in prison and doesn’t get to keep her baby.

Didn’t she have sex with Fred the night before she tricked him into crossing the border? They were staying with that family in the country and she invited him into her bed. He must not be sterile after all.

Hopefully it wasn’t him- pretty magical plot twist fertility timing if it was.

Yeah not a fan of this storyline. Wouldn't it also put baby Nichole's paternity in question?

a)I think she genuinely has feelings for him and is also playing the long game.
b) Fred

Yes, ugh. Also I'm very sad about Alma.

I just finished the first three episodes - the ending of the third gave me hope that it will pick up the pace from here on out. I find myself conflicted

SPOILERS BELOW

I was really struck by the dissonance between what June pretends to want and what she actually DOES. She really has a lack of focus. Her #1 job at that farm in episode one should have been to recuperate and move on. Get the rest of the Handmaids out of Gilead if that's what they want and organize the remaining to join the Resistance. Instead, she's messing around with not one, but two trips to Jezebels, the latter of which almost certainly resulted in the discovery that the Handmaids were in the area. So she gets captured, poor Mrs. Keyes is captured, and eventually all the Handmaids. It's sloppy. If June were inept and portrayed as such it would be one thing, but she's not.

I was also pretty disturbed by the whole Mrs. Keyes' storyline, up to and including manipulating and encouraging a traumatized teen to kill. Then again, she was poisoning her husband, so... And the part where she describes being passed around to all these men. I mean, I realize Gilead is awful and everything, but there wasn't any man at all that would say, "This is wrong." And I frankly question a 14 year old playing that part as well.

I am very over the June torture porn and while I get what Episode 2 was trying to do, just no. And bringing Hannah in? Again, really exploitative. And it's beginning to strain credulity that June has not been killed and put on the wall, much less the rest of the Handmaids.

I am grieving the loss of Alma. I really loved her. I hope she will be the link to what's going on in Gilead and that we will get more of her origin story.

I'm loving alllll the Canada stuff. Serena's pregnancy is a trip, and calling Nichole's paternity into question could be an interesting twist. But it needs to end with Fred in jail or extradited to wherever the United States is these days to face justice. Great side plot with Moira and the kid that misses Gilead. Very happy to see Emily and Rita too.

I think this could shape up to be a good season. I don't know what they are going to do in Season 5 though. Seems like this 10 episode arc would be a good wrap up.

Was Alma killed by the train? I thought so but I was confused when she was in the last scene in the gymnasium but Moira was there, too so I guess that was a flash-black, which means Jeanine and June are still on the run, right?!

So I thought they were just separated - with Alma and Brianna not making the crossing, but just went back and watched it - and I think they were hit by the train. If you watch it, the camera pulls back and you see June and Janine running off on one side and on the other, one girl dead close to the tracks and the Guardian is standing close to her. Then further back it looks like Aunt Lydia on the ground with another Handmaid. I seriously did not think Alma was dead. Now I am truly grieving the loss of Alma. RIP saucy Alma.

The scene in the gym was a flashback to right after they were captured.

Alma and Breanna were definitely killed by the train.

I agree with PP that it’s truly unbelievable June hasn’t been killed yet. Truly unbelievable they’d send just one guard with them to the breeding farm. She can’t possibly get captured yet again and survive. I hope they don’t try it.

I agree it strains credulity but she was protected by powerful commanders and eyes until now. Definitely hard to see any plausible way out of this one though.

At least it’s easier to conceptualize two people successfully avoiding capture than a group of several.

I am a huge fan of this storyline as long as they make it satisfying. There are so many places to go with it.

I'm not really upset if Fred is the father. It was assumed he was sterile b/c Serena never got pregnant and June didn't until she had sex with Nick. Correlation doesn't equal causation as they say. In both the book and the show it's emphasized that Gilead doesn't test the men.

I think it's also possible (but unlikely) that Agent Handsome from America is the father, which throws a whole new wrench into the works. I kind of hope he's not because we're veering into soap opera territory, but possible.

The most boring thing they could do with the pregnancy storyline is Serena is convicted of whatever, imprisoned, and the baby cruelly taken from her just as if she were a handmaid. But what I'd REALLY like to see is Serena making a deal to testify against Fred, etc. and walking free. But Canada won't accept her as an asylum seeker and deports her and the baby to Gilead. And she has to make her way in a society she helped to create, but as an average person, and not the wife of a founding commander. I think that would be fascinating.

I hope they don't exclusively focus on the June storyline with the resistance. The first three episodes signal to me that the focus will be Canada, the past, and the present with the resistance. I hope it's in that order.
