Freaking Girl Scout Camp

I registered my child for the Burke Lake Adventures camp and it is a lottery, but I haven't heard anything about a waitlist number.

Thanks for any info for this newbie!

It's the sleepaway camps that fill up very quickly on registration day. If your daughter is interested in sleepaway camp in future years, make sure you are logged in online in the waiting room before the registration opens in order to have a chance. Sleepaway camps are not filled by lottery, like some of the day camps are.

Last week, they decided not to open sleepaway camp at Winona this summer due to lack of staff.

As far as I know, the day camps are planning to run as scheduled. Hope your child get a spot and has a great time!

I don’t think so yet. Final payment got pushed from 4/12 to 5/3. They canceled the buses to Potomac Woods and Winona. They also had to limit the number of girls and raised price of bus to May Flather. They giving folks more time to work out their plans.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the bus issue caused at least some to cancel. That Friday pickup would be really tough for some families. The trip from MD to Potomac Woods during rush hour is a real pain in the butt.

We got called off of the waitlist about 2 weeks before the session started. Thankfully she didn't have another camp scheduled, so we could make it work. This was her first year and she wasn't going with any friends, but she had a blast! Everyone was incredibly helpful in helping her feel welcomed, including the other campers and she can't wait to go back next year. The drive to PW was long, but traffic actually wasn't so bad.

Did anyone successfully get in today? What a cluster.

I am unclear as to whether we got in. Could not get past the payment page, but my card was charged twice. No confirmation, and now slots are gone.

My card was charged 9 times! I kept getting a screen error that the payment didn't go through, and try again. Same thing was happening to another mom I was texting with during the stress. I think it successfully went through on the 14th attempt. Sure hope they refund all those $50 charges without a lot of trouble. I can't understand why their system is so terrible.

I also got stuck on the charging page, repeatedly. Eventually got through using a debit card, and received the confirmation email. I have not yet gone to check whether my credit card was charged for earlier tries!

Camps are great, but the the signup system is terrible. To be fair, Fairfax Parktakes signups were also today and their website also was stuck.

You should not need two adults on separate laptops working for 30 minutes, in order to register for camps. I hate lottery systems but maybe that is the better way.

Just checked - 4 pending charges on my card from those attempts. I assume GS will cancel them without my having to do anything ....

Looks like I registered successfully after all. Nine times.

That's kind of my fear too. I would assume the system wouldn't fill up a camp with the same kid 9 times, but it's terrible so who knows. There might be some big time movement on those wait lists after all!

Total mess. Took me about 4 tries to get my two kids registered. Then, because I'm a troop leader, I was able to register one of the other kids in my troop whose mom was having problems. I ended up with 9 pending charges on the two different credit cards I tried. On the Facebook pages for the camps, they said that the pending charges will probably not go through as actual charges, but to email and let them know about it. I really hope they fix this for the future. I preferred the old system, to be honest.

Email whom? I have over a dozen pending charges too.

I sent a screen shot of the extra charges and my membership number to customercare@gscnc.org. You only know if your registration actually went through if you get a recipe or it shows up in My Events

Last year they were able to take masks off when around only girls from their program (considered a “family” group). So they really only wore them when they were in the lodges or sharing an outdoor activity space with another group, or all-camp activities. My daughter said it ended up being really no big deal.

I "like" how the receipt doesn't even say what card was charged, so I can't even tell which one eventually went through.

By the grade of God, my girls at 10 and 11 in line.

We did get off the waitlist from last year to attend a sleep away camp in Maine this year. It took two years to finally get a spot.
