If the dog is secured in the car with a seat belt harness, it is not actually possible for the dog to approach the letter carrier unless the letter carrier for some unknown reason gets in the car. I don't think the OP needs to do more than that and certainly she doesn't need to be threatened with mace over the letter carrier's unreasonable fear.

The fear is not unreasonable. Dog attacks are on the rise and mail carriers are often victims of these.

It is absolutely unreasonable to be afraid of an obviously restrained dog which is not particularly close to you. You don’t get to threaten people who are minding their own business and not actually harming you.

I said the fear isn’t unreasonable. People fear what they fear.

I can carry a handgun in most places. I can’t waive it at people.

It’s ‘wave’.

Postal workers get bitten by dogs a lot. Even dogs people claim are friendly. Your carrier has a right to be afraid. They have a right to not deliver your mail if they are afraid of you dog. Dogs can get out of dog seatbelts. You should have immediately closed the car door when you saw the carrier or put the dog inside.

Close the car door proactively so the mail carrier can see the dog is contained. Short leash walk your dog as far as you can from the carrier when passing. Now- as for the mace— call the post office and report that it it happens again. If your dog is leashed or behind a closed car door, there is no reason for the carrier to threaten you with mace.

Yes- the dog was also on the leash in the car. She scared me. Because she may be trying to set us up I notified postal. We are in a millionaire dollar fancy house and it looks like we have deep pockets. We rent and the deep pockets have lint.

You sound like a truly horrible person. You deserve it when you stop getting mail. You were scared to close your car door? Oh no, you were afraid of pet repellent, because it has killed so many people? You know what your carrier is afraid of? The dog viciously birthing them. Oh and COVID, which has killed hundreds of postal workers. That on top on never being able to take a day off because the thousands of other workers who are sick or in quarantine. But geez OP, you had every right to complain given the carrier dared to ask that you close a car door.

Mail people are pretty experienced with dogs

You and your dog are unreasonable OP.

My last neighbor was like this - and the dog went on to attack 3 dogs in the neighborhood. Owner was insistent nothing was their fault.

Agree. Dog bites are common and a big deal for mail carriers. It's highly unlikely they are trying to set you up. Look at the link you were sent, 5800 bites in 2020.

The dog was buckled in with a dog seat belt. I told the mail person this after she held that I had to close the doors. I should add we have communal boxes and based on the location there is no need for her to approach our home. Two weeks ago she yelled at me to take him in as we were on a walk on the other side of our private alley. Dog was in mid pee.

Was he unleashed? In most locations, he should be leashed if in the front yard. You don’t get to be annoyed for ppl wanting you to leash your dog as required by law.

The OP clarified on the 2nd page that the dog was leashed.

Listen I am a total dog lover but any mail person who carries dog repellent does so out of genuine fear. The postal worker is afraid. Maybe previously bitten. Cut them a break and keep your doors shut.

Crazy dog person here, just close your car doors, secure your dog, keep your dog away from the mailman. FFS
