I don't think that's parents in DC. I would bet all DCPS parents are fine with masks. |
I mean seriously, Costco and Trader Joe's clerks have safer work environments than we will have. Please don't respond with "well go work there, then" . Im just trying to explain that we need systems in place that are going to keep teachers safe and there aren't any yet. It will be interesting to see how summer bridge goes. Those teachers and students are going to be the real guinea pigs.
I seriously think we need oversight by the medical community.Once that is established, I'll feel better about the whole thing. |
Don’t call it instruction. You mean childcare. And yes- we likely will. I think you can still read books at home... last time I checked |
You are a teacher and think your work is just childcare? Awesome. |
I think that is a decent idea. What we need is $$$$$. The WTU asked for $11m, which really doesn't seem like so much to me. |
You are treating it like childcare. So that is what it is to you. And yea, awesome is the word I use. |
Of course I can, if I don't have other work to do. But then I am doing your job. And there is nothing wrong with school serving as childcare as well as providing education. Europeans understand that, Americans apparently still don't. Here is an article from the Atlantic that talks about the importance of school AS CHILDCARE as a feminist issue: https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2020/06/child-care-infrastructure-britain-boris-johnson/613672/ It has nothing to do with disrespecting teachers. |
All teachers do for elementary students is read books? |
It is childcare. And education. Both are your job-- though given your level of self-respect and/or trolling one has to question your particular skills in either area. And none of it is happening for little kids at home. |
Right? Who knew! Salary cuts for all. Apparently we can just hire 10 year olds to do this job. |
I am 100% not only fine with but also an advocate for masks at all times. However, I also know there is zero chance my prek4 and K children who will be in a JKLM school this Fall will wear one the entire day- here and there, yes, but mostly off. And yes, we practice every single day for over a month now. It’s just a reality of that age |
Your pk & k children will absolutely wear a mask for the majority of the day with appropriate expectations in place and a good teacher. If they can be trained to criss cross applesauce and all the other routines established in early education they can be trained for masks. They just need to understand that taking it off is not an option so please also practice them understanding that at home this summer or consider keep them home in the fall. |
I do think below about 3rd or 4th grade it will not be possible to expect masks to be worn all day.
But all classrooms should employ multiple measures like opening windows, plastic screens, and face shields and masks on teachers. And if teachers really can’t won’t teach the same grade they should offer to be re-assigned. The ongoing education of the children needs be prioritized, we cannot wait for a vaccine. |
I can't speak for anyone else, of course, but I appreciate my kid's teachers A LOT. Her teacher this year was crying because she missed her students, and hated teaching them over a computer screen instead of in person. We could tell that she really cared about our kid, and was doing her best to support them and keep them on track with at least some learning. I am sure that her teachers next year will be the same -- dedicated and caring. We are already preparing my kid for the fact that when/if she is back in school, she will have to wear a mask. That's just the way it will be. I would love for schools to be open, because DL is hard on teachers and kids. But only if they can be opened safely, which I know will mean masks, distancing, and other precautions that will not always be easy or convenient. Pitting parents against teachers is not helpful. Everyone needs to be compassionate and flexible. |
Little kids in other countries wear masks. There is no reason that most kids in America can't wear them, too. They learn and adapt to many other classroom rules, why not this one? |
