This is a different song, same tune. I taught preschool and we did this one at circle time. There's even a book. It's appropriate for preschool, but the steam boat one isn't! |
Miss Suzy, Boston, 70s! Thank you OP, I love hearing these! |
Our version (August GA, 70s) was similar to many of these, except what happens with the glass:
Miss Suzie had a steamboat The steamboat had a bell Miss Suzie went to heaven The steamboat went to Hello, operator, please give me number nine and if you disconnect me I will kick you up behind the 'frigerator there was a piece of glass Miss Suzie sat upon it and it went right up her ask me no more questions I'll tell you no more lies the boys are in the bathroom, zipping up their flies are in the city, the bees are in the park 100 boys and 100 girls are kissing in the D-A-R-K D-A-R-K D-A-R-K DARK! DARK! DARK! We definitely said "I'll tell you no more lies" after "Ask me no more questions" which seems to vary among the versions. Another thing we did besides this and the Tiny Tim song was pick up a dandelion seed head and chant "Mama had a baby, and its head (pause to pop the head off the stem) popped off." Any one else? Oh, and we also did "Strut Miss Liza," where you'd dance between two lines of kids clapping. |
I'm the original PP above (the Ms. Lulu poster) and I am from Monroeville, so east of the city. Went to University Park ES, then Monroeville Jr High (now Gateway Middle School), then Gateway Sr High. Graduated in 1983. And I stand corrected. You both are right that the flies were in the city not in the kitchen. |
So many little variations:
Miss Lucy had a steamboat The steamboat had a bell Mss Lucy went to heaven and the steamboat went to.. Hello operator, give me number nine And if you disconnect me I will knock you on your.. Behind the refrigerator there is a piece of glass And if you dare to step on it I'll shove it up your... Ask me no more questions Tell me no more lies The boys are in the bathroom pulling down their.. flies are in the meadow, the bees are in the park Miss Lucy and her boyfriend are kissing in the D-A-R-K D-A-R-K Dark, dark dark! Long Island, late 1970s, early 1980s. |

Grew up in Virginia and this is the one from my ES except substitute "Kick" for "paddle" |
Grew up in Fairfax County in the early 90s:

DARK! Dark is like a movie a movie's like a show a show is like a tv set and that is all I know I know my ma I know I know my pa I know I know my sister with the 80 meter bra There must've been an ending but I don't remember it... |
Wow I am 26 and sang this in elementary school! I had no idea it was so widespread and dated back so far. |
We did the dandelion thing too. WEstchester County, NY, early to mid 80s |
Ah, memories. I learned this in 2nd grade and was all proud to come home and sing it to my 6th grade sister. She proceeded to threaten me with "I'll tell Mom you said hell" for months. |
^CT in the 80s and also did the dandeoline thing
For us, it was Miss Lucy, 18 hr bra, and the glass "went right up her..." We also sang the tiny Tim bathtub/alligator purse as a clapping song Anyone do the "crack an egg on your back, let the yoke drip down, yoke drip down..." hypnotizing game where you were supposed to open your eyes and see different colors? |
Ms Lucy south of Boston -late 70’s. Man this was a local thing! |
I just asked my 13 year old if she knew this song and she said "of course, except it's Lulu" |
