Ask your DD what she prefers. |
Hotel, pool, room service , done. Hope the repairman comes and it's an easy fix. |
Wow. The air conditioner was a very reasonable suggestion and I was trying to be helpful, having been in your situation (pregnant, small child, no husband, derecho, miserable). But now I agree: you sound really high maintenance, and frankly a little bitchy. Eat some protein before you interact with your child, for her sake. Then go check into the Ritz and be done with it. |
+100 Then hit DCUM up with your next decision. Demanding job, lol. |
Not the OP , but running and out and just buying and hooking up an air conditioner while oregnant with a small child is some really not well thought out advice. They are bulky and heavy. and she needs it for one night. It makes way more sense to go to a hotel or her moms. The OP is clearly overwhelmed, hot and miserable. Of course that was her response. |
Hotel.
I totally understand not going out to Sears and getting a window unit with a 4 year old and feeling like crap. How is she supposed to get it from the car to the house if she can't lift it? You could order one on Amazon that might even show up before the repair person does and then you won't have to do any heavy lifting to and from the car. |
Window fans aren't heavy. They are thin & just light plastic. They aren't huge giant metal air conditioners. I don't think you're thinking of what the op needs which she probably could manage & grab at target. |
Op here: I set up fans in our bedrooms and just stayed here. It's bearable. There's no way I could have carried an air conditioner, which is what I was being snarky about.
I mean I couldn't do that in the best shape ever with no kid. With a crying overtired four year old who has been at camp all day and at the beginning of my third trimester? It's laughable. |
I would do the hotel option if it is financially feasible. Or just go to Mom's house & deal w/the traffic for the one day.
Fans tend to blow out hot air at times. |
I totally should have gone to a hotel, it's not a financial issue at all. I was just tired and ultimately thought it would be a lot of work to pack up our stuff etc. my daughter was super overtired today too and I knew it was going to be hard to deal with the logistics. Now I'm really uncomfortable and wishing I had just sucked it up! |
My AC died yesterday afternoon and the indoor temp went up to 77. That may not seem bad to most people, but heat literally makes me sick, always has. I can't imagine being pregnant and putting up with that, especially with another child. Apparently, everyone's AC seemed to go out this week. We have the top level service plan with a large HVAC company, and they were so swamped I was told (yesterday) no one was available until late tonight. Fortunately, an appointment freed up this morning and the tech found a bad capacitor in the outside unit, which he replaced. It was up to 83 inside by then and I was in really bad shape. I hope the OP gets some sleep tonight. It's supposed to get up to 95 tomorrow - unbearable. Anyone who does not have working AC is in danger. I hope there are places set up in DC to take in the less fortunate.
One takeaway - unlike a lot of generic service plans (most of which are useless), we've found that our HVAC plan is really worth the investment. We always seem to have at least one emergency call each year; not only do we get priority service, but the repair cost is almost always free and generally covers the cost of the plan. Something else that may seem obvious to the rest of the world, but it took me a long time to figure out - light bulbs can generate a whole lot of heat. Turning off most lights in the home can really help keep your home cooler. |
Why couldn't the OP had a neighbor or someone else get an A/C unit (meaning the window fan) and have them help out?
I am amazed at the lack of people on this site that have very little independence skills. |
Cold shower and a fan. |
+1. You have a house 30 minutes away to stay in for free? What is the problem? You have to leave 30 minutes earlier tomorrow to take your kid to camp? Is that really such an inconvenience? Jesus. |
Actually, telling a pregnant woman with a 4 year old in tow to go out and buy and then install an an air conditioner ( that probably weighs 50 lbs) is pretty stupid advice. That would probably take an hour. In 30 minutes, she could be at her Mom's house. Eat some protein before you give moronic advice. |
