Am i wasting my time applying for jobs on USAJOBS.gov?

It is true some listings have a secret candidate in mind. Only way to find out for sure is to find a mutual connection at the agency and ask.

Not true. I don’t think my agency advertises on USAJobs.

I think the problem with your applications has been that you think reglamentary is a word.

You need to invest multiple hours customizing your application for each posting. Don't bother with positions for which you are only moderately qualified for. Only include relevant information but absolutely don't try to be concise - they are looking for all the key words and extensive evidence that you meet every single requirement mentioned in the posting. Google "USAJOBS advice" and get ideas from some of the numerous websites out there.

As noted, a huge challenge is just getting past the initial screening so that the people in the program ever get to see your resume.

Yes, it's a huge time waste. Yes, the process is wasteful and does not result in the best hire. Yes, we all hate it.
But it's also the only pathway to most federal jobs.

Good luck!

Pay attention to this advice. This is what my husband did and he got a ton of interviews. The first screening is basically just looking for the relevant keywords and checking them off the list.

By the way I'm a VET so I know my rights which nowadays are none! I don't argue with the opposite gender!

Yes, that word exists, but that doesn’t change the fact that you sound crazy.

HOWEVER!
Here is THE! TRUE and UNGODLY reality! Those who are heads of depts, such as managers supervisors or any other hiring authority will not hire unless totally necessary. This vacancies are all bonus proned; Meaning of this positions will not be filled; they got to get the job done with a few and if so acconplished the heads will get their bonus. Also it is who you know and not WHAT you know !
that will get you in !
I had sample after sample of people who get their own in on the basis of acquaintances, family ,favors ,political, ethnic and etc etc .Also whoever gets a position , has the power to create an empowered group that does not allow anyone else in IF! they don't want to and honestly that exist among the ethnic(whites, blacks, latinos ,etc, etc) groups creating gangs and turfs within the work environment to empower themselves for job security ;empowerment and permanance. YYYES this is USA but from the door on in it is a different story. No Democracy no EOE no nothing! Just total rule of the strongest in the jungle

PS What to do ?? wing it ! Look for the best, check if you fit under grade offered and apply aaaand cross your fingers ! It is not a guarantee but from where I'm standing it's higher ground, I can see the enemy and his tactics! GOOD LUCK.If you don't belive me . DO! your own research and comparison and you will see then!

PSS NO! I havent been able to get a job because I exploded too soon and told them off! They can be racist , discriminative , NO! EOE and down right EVIL! so with all this said and done! NO FEAR! TRY ANYWAY AND FIGHT ON > I SURE WILL! NOTHING IS OVER UNTIL THE FATLADY SINGS OR I will DIE TRYING! I have so many stories of guys and gals who have fallen and gotten up and tried, tried, tried until you get them so tired that they give it to ya! Their respect is hard to win! They think that because they won that they are better than us! And they are is just flesh and bone and they will die off ! Gad luck! Nothing is forever over ! remenber that! This is the truth! Let the chips fall where they may!

Dr. Bronner is that you?

Two of my former colleagues and I just got hired by the feds, all coming from the private sector and not veterans. They came in at a grade 12, I came in at a 14. I applied for two years, one of them for 6 months and the other one for 2 months only before we got hired. So it is possible.

This. And tailor each resume to the job opening you're applying to.

Yup. It is frustrating but not necessarily a waste of time. I got (and accepted) an offer but I'd probably been applying on USAJobs for 5 years before that happened. Happy to be a fed now. You also do need to tailor your app to each job posting and use their words. I guess it's a question of both stick-to-itiveness and strategery.

Also be on the lookout for direct hire positions- becoming a bit more common for technical positions in particular. I think some hiring officials were tired of getting a shortlist of vets of applicants who had the points (vets) but not the desired experience. It’s more work for the hiring officials but it removes a barrier of getting past HR.
