Kind of funny but my almost 5 and almost 3 year olds still wear bibs. They’re solid colored silicone ones. They don’t complain and their bibs still catch food so I consider it a parenting win |
I know this is an OLD post. IDK why it was revisited.
My kids never wore bibs. A few times maybe but they would pull them off and just get in the way. If they are wearing a shirt or outfit I don’t want stained, I just take it off. They eat lunch with just pants on and then we wash up and get dressed again. Or the shirts get dirty. I don’t really care. |
What about drool though? |
My 4 yo twins stopped wearing them regularly around 3 or just before. But if we are eating something messy (eg, spaghetti and meatballs) or if they end up bathing before dinner (which happens if we are running late making dinner), we ask them to wear one and they understand it’s so they don’t get their clothes dirty. |
My kid is only 16 months, but I can't imagine being ready to ditch the bib by 2. Helps that he doesn't care about the bib and has no problem wearing it (at least for now). |
When they could lean over the plate and keep the food mostly on it? It's about fine motor readiness (not dropping food, using utensils), mental readiness (remembering to lean forwards, caring about staying clean), not age. |
My boys wear a big paper napkin tucked in their shirt collar when eating messy food such as spaghetti or ribs. They don’t mind it at all and often choose to do this without being told. It sure saves shirts from stains. |
My 2yo stopped wearing one at 18mos or so. I still put one on her at MIL's house because she insists...but otherwise, it's whatever, even with messy yogurt. If she deliberately makes a mess, there are consequences. |
My daughter is 20 months and pulls them off if I try to put one on her, so now is when she stopped wearing a bib.
I would love it if she would still wear one, because she insists on eating yogurt and other things all by herself and, while she's very good at it, she still has the spoon motor skills of a 20 month old. |
When they started refusing to wear it. So sometime between 2 and 3. If the kid will still happily wear it, go with it. Saves shirts for sure. |
Same or we just take his shirt off (at home). He’s almost 3 and every once in a while he still pulls his bib out of the drawer and puts it on for cereal or oatmeal. (It’s one of those silicone wipe clean bibs with a pocket to catch spills). |
I'm giggling at this thread. People actually managed to get competitive about which kid went bib-less first. I miss the "Before Times" when this was a legitimate parenting concern!![]() |
NP, When I use to eat lobster I always wore a bib. And I've eaten with other adults who basically use their napkin as a bib. Bibs are for messy eaters of all ages. ![]() |
I know it’s an old thread but for the first time moms don’t buy bibs.
Im a minimalist my kids never wore one, just changed shirts and then wipes the floor as needed. I find the bibs with the pockets especially disgusting as good just collects there gross. |
I like the pocket ones! As I’m cleaning up her meal, I just turn it inside out, and a quick rinse with a little soap under the faucet and it’s dry for her next meal. I agree bibs are necessary, but I like that her shirt is always clean after eating! |
