Some saying is that top 2% of population can be considered as gifted. Now out of all kids, there are 16.6% in AAP Level 4.
Definitely getting into AAP level 4 doesn't mean the kid is necessarily gifted. |
How do you know this??? |
Because they are smart and will want to be with engaging and engaged partners, who are also capable of supporting themselves. It's an important issue in our family. |
So I must be a moron research scientist whose wife is a SAHM? Crap. I better send back my phd. |
I think your difficulty in logical reasoning reflects on your ph d more than the previous post. Nothing in that said anyone was a moron. And it referenced a family-specific concern that probably has nothing to do with you. |
I sahm because I can't afford to work. For those moms who make lots of money, it makes sense to work. But in my field, a good daycare for both my little ones would cost almost as much as I make. And my income has no bearing on my intelligence .. . I was in the top 1% of my class on high school, and I do have a master's degree. Not complaining - I made the choice to pursue a lower paying field, and I knew that in advance. But to state that sahm are not engaging or engaged is incredibly ignorant and close minded. |
So for the Forestville percentage numbers, is that the number that qualified based on their Cogat scores and acceptance by the the FCPS board? Or, does that include principal designees? |
How did this become a WOHM vs SAHM debate? |
Because a previous poster alleged that McLean had more AAP students because moms could afford to stay at home and make the kids take the entry tests several times, challenge scores, etc. That is total BS. As a WOHM in McLean, with kids in AAP, I responded that most of the AAP moms actually work outside the home -- which is true. To which a SAHM mom responded that her kids were geniuses, as is she, and she stays home because they "need" her. Most of the interesting women I know work -- and they have a life besides their kids, working out, shopping, etc. It is just a fact. Why do single people run from most married people with kids? Your kids are pretty darn boring to anyone but you. And who do you give an assignment to if you want to get it done well? Someone with a full plate already - I find WOHMs are much more efficient at everything than the rare SAHM I have to deal with. |
Why don't we just leave it at that? No need to embarrass ourselves. |
Forestville mom here. I can tell you for certain that not all 204 are center eligible. Lots of very bright principal designates, yes, but center eligible, no. That said, a high percentage of center eligible kids did elect (well their parent did elect) to remain at Forestville instead of opting for the center at Forest Edge. |
How do you know all those students were not center eligible? That is the number reported to the state of Virginia. The best audit proof for the 204 is found by going to the FCPS Boarddocs under school board follow-up. These are staff's official responses for the record to school board questions. Link: http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/8VMDZN383162/$file/School%20Board%20Follow%20Up%20Reponses3.pdf The chart on page 64 /68 is "AAP Local Level IV services Membership February 2012 Center eligible students who decide to stay at local school" and is in response to this question on page 35: "Level IV AAP services April 16, 2012, work session Staff response: Peter Noonan #12-46 Please provide a demographic and geographic breakdown of the 18 percent of students in grades 3-8 in Level IV AAP during FY 2012. (Tamara Derenak Kaufax)" The Forestville number that stayed at the base school for February 2012 is 145. The membership report is 183. So the percent posted is wrong since FCPS is running a subjective double set of books. I guess Forestville is dumping in how many ever it takes to get 2 nice size classes per grade level. Chaos by Carol Horn and the parents that get to call a kid gifted....shocked, appalled, and disgusted that these numbers don't match up. |
adding to my post:
The center qualified number includes those who got in on parent referral or appeal. The additional students might have been in the pool and not filed appeals so ... I think there should be additional data on center qualified without parental referral or appeal. |
PP you sound horribly ignorant. I was a SAHM for 10 years and was anything but boring. I had children so that I could raise them, with my morals. I loved every minute of it. I now work part time, by choice, and relish the memories of being home everyday with them when they were younger. Wonderful! My daughters tell me that when they have children they are going to stay home and raise them. My son tells me that he is going marry a girl like me; someone who will stay home when the kids are young. I am so proud of them! life is about family and making memories; not work and making money. |
I think they should start with an accurate number of who they actually admitted and which students are at which schools. Even that seems hazy per the profile listings. |
