There is nothing nice, respectful or appreciative about this question. Everyone is busy, high schoolers included, but these kids are so entitled and helicoptered they are not prepared for the real world.

Badly phrased on the kid's part (vs. "or do we have to meet in person") but a legit question given that the school I interview for lists Skype as an optional format.

For example, a student would send email requesting an extension on a deadline. I may have been perfectly inclined to grant it without much detail as to why they needed an extension...until I read through the next ten paragraphs of blathering nonsense about their social crisis and completely ridiculous reasons for an extension.

Oh God, yes! I got the point of saying "yes, you may have the extension as long as you promise not to tell me why you need it." My favorite reason was "this keg we got needs a really weird tap and I have to go all the way to Hightstown to get it."

9:15 makes a good point re Skype interviews. OP, showing a little understanding and forebearance might make you a more effective interviewer for your alma mater -- not to mention, a kinder person.

Dear Mrs. XXX:

I would like to schedule a meeting with you for my XXX U admissions interview sometime this week, preferably Wednesday. Is this convenient for you? And will the interview be over the phone, or will I have to meet you in person? I have many things scheduled this week and I am very busy so I would like to know as soon as possible.

Thanks!!

Sally Student

Note to Sally:

I suggest you rephrase third sentence; something like: "... or do you prefer to meet in person?". Omit fourth sentence entirely -- no need to mention how busy you are. Also, lose the exclamation points after Thanks!! -- in fact probably best to use a more professional tone for your closing. Would suggest, "thank you".

After you rewrite, send me a copy one last time so I can proof for misspellings before you send it off.
