Why extreme couponing is wasteful and GREEDY.

Anonymous
I think it takes a special kind of person to engage in extreme couponing. It's definitely not for everyone. I, for one, can't imagine eating the same kind of canned soup for days on end, or even using the same type of body wash/deodorant for many years. I need to try different stuff.

Well, everyone's different, and some people do like the fact that they're getting all those products for free. But if you ask me, variety is a spice of life and is worth paying a little extra for it.

Just my 2 cents.

Amen to that sister! At any time I might have 4 or 5 different soaps and 2 shampoos in the bathroom so I can use what suits my mood that day! Having said that I do tend to have a couple of old standbys that I tend to buy over and over in addition to the different ones.

Desperate Housewives is a scripted show. People don't act like that, honey, it is fictional!

No it's not! It's REAL!

It isn't real. The women are actresses! Marcia Cross was on Melrose Place. Terri Hatchett was on Superman. Eva Longoria was on..well I can't remember what other shows she was on. It is a scripted television show! It is NOT a reality show!

Terri Hatchett? Is she related to Molly Hatchett? Or Lizzie Borden?

Oh god, ok got the name wrong...Hatcher. There you go. FWIW, I don't watch the show. Thank you wkikpedia for helping me with the DCUM crowd. At least I know it is scripted!
Oh my gosh, I KNEW someone was going to pounce on you for that! I laughed OUT LOUD at the whole thing....it was soooo predictable and strangely funny. FWIW DH is my FAVORITE show. LOVE IT! It's really the only show I watch and I wait until Monday to watch online because I don't have tv hooked up to cable or anything.

Pure greed. I tried couponing at bloom since the month of June they were doubling coupons up to $1.99..I went in there after cutting my coupons and found out that the extreme couponers had cleaned out most supplies. A clerk told me that pasta (free after a double coupon) was cleaned out by ONE woman that brought in coupons and just kept her transactions separated (bloom only allows 20 coupons per transaction so she found a way around this). I was told my the same clerk that the extreme couponers will wait until the store opens and the same 3 or 4 people will take the whole inventory. So I used 4 coupons and got almost nothing. Much like the extreme couponers on tv, most of these people were obese and greedy. Does a family of 3 really need 100 boxes of pasta? Or 80 packs of deodorant? How about 55 boxes of tylenol?
People have become greedy. If the deals are so good, get some or DONATE to foodbank! I would like a deal too and I can show some respect to other shoppers and only buy a few of each product.
But really, selling items you got for free at a garage sale? A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF TACKY. Selling toothpaste for $1.00?! You can walk into wegman's today and it's only 89 cents WITHOUT a coupon.

And if you look at the bottom of the post, it looks like the wife was a teacher and stole a bunch of supplies from school . . . you are certainly right about the greed!

I have a friend who is an extreme couponer, and it makes no sense what she does. It seems like a lot of time and effort for little net gain. She once sent me a few coupon links when I was on maternity leave. I tried to get the deals, but decided it was not worth my time. What is sad is that these people drag their kids around doing this (as stores are open during times when kids are awake) and it must take away the quality time they could be having with their families.

I don't really understand even how extreme couponing works, but I do know someone who does it and she admits that she needs to be constantly watching herself for the hoarding urge. She does donate all the personal care items to women's shelters and churches, though, I know that much.

What I find interesting about them is they refer to "my" stockpile. Even the craig's list ad said "my" items. It's interesting and do think many are hoarders/obsessive or something.

I used to only eat what I could buy on sale and with a coupon when I was a very poor college student. I love getting free stuff and I'm cheap but I recently coupon-ed a couple of times and only got crappy food and it took a lot of time so I gave it up.

I found interesting the pp who made it a math project for her child. learn math; save money.

Ummm.....you realize that "Reality TV" is loosely scripted, yes? It varies per show as to how "loosely" scripted, but...umm....it is entertainment television. The only part of 94% of reality shows that is different from shows like DH is that the talent on DH is recognizable and gets paid decently.

I am not sure which one of us this is directed to but, yes, I understand in reality tv there is probably some script and/or manipulation of events to make it interesting. RHoNJ and RHoNY make $250,000 per episode according to some reports. I believe the women on these shows are over the top and are on tv for this reason. To assert that DH is a reality show is wrong, as is to assert all women in real life behave this way. Women who extreme coupon follow the same behaviors that is what makes extreme coupling. Posters are not criticizing people who use coupons, just the extreme cases. Her logic in using DH/RH as a comparison (I think she was trying to stir up some kind of class/SES debate) is flawed.

I do what is probably considered to be extreme couponing. I never have the same products--I have 3 different kinds of toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, razors, etc in my linen closet right now. I don't stockpile in the way that those who are really into it do, I just use two small shelves in my narrow linen closet. I have probably a 6 month supply of toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, shampoo, deoderant, body wash, face soap, razors for myself and DH, tampons, etc.
I also only spend $80 a week at the grocery store, because I never, ever buy any personal care items there where they're overpriced. I only buy organic produce, meat, and dairy. It takes me about an extra hour a week total to plan my trips and carry them out.

I don't think extreme couponing is wasteful and greedy because I routinely save a minimum of 60% or more on my grocery bills and I never buy what I won't use.

I've never used a coupon in my life. Not sure if that makes me an idiot or normal.

I saw one episode of extreme couponing. One person basically took "orders" from charities, and went out to find what they needed. She used to be really poor and got good at couponing, and used those skills to give back. That was kind of neat. She also said that you should call the store in advance to order items that you want a lot of, so that you don't leave an empty shelf. Did I see the ONE episode where the person featured wasn't BSC?

Well, these extreme couponers better enjoy the ride while it lasts, because if people think stores are going to continue giving a way thousands of dollars of product a day to people, they're crazy. I'm sure lots of people are trying to do this now because of the tv show. The stores can absorb a few whack jobs but if this becomes a widespread phenom they will put a stop to it. And that ultimately just screws the rest of us.
Anonymous
The stores don't absorb anything. The Manufacturers put out the coupons and they reimburse the store the face value of the coupon plus $.08 handling fee.

The same with sales and register rewards or extra care bucks. Those are all reimbursed to the store. Unless it is a Store Loyalty program, the store does not lose out on any money.

I'm Considered a Extreme couponer. Ive been couponing for a few years and cut our $1000 a month budget by 50% , I went from heading to the store every pay day to only shopping when I see a deal I want. Ive also paid my Mortgage down nearly 20% in 2 years because of it.

Its hard to find coupons good for the healthier foods I like, and there are almost none for meat. But the savings on Things like Trashbags, Toilet Paper, Medications, Reynolds Wrap, Cleaning Supplies, Laundry soap etc, more than makes up for what I still spend on food.

A lot of people who post and are Anti-Couponing, act like Organics is the only thing that is healthy. Last time I checked, Fresh Vegetables, Lean Meat , and Fruit were still healthy.

It seriously seems like the same 2-3 people are posting all over the internet that couponing is horribly rude and anyone who does it is a Fat ugly heifer. You people need to seriously get a life, and also get some manners.

Whats funny, is I can spot the type of women who post this a mile away. They are the ones driving a Prius with a 10k rock on their finger and Drinking a Vitamin water because it is so much healthier than that Gatorade Crap!

Seriously is there like a tanning code too? All yuppies must act like a stuck up spoiled b!tch , and be tanned within 10 shades darker before summer begins? Don't forget to call every woman who is slightly overweight a Obese cow while you are at it.

How do you get organic and fresh food? I never see coupons for that stuff. I never use coupons because they are not generally for the things we buy. Am I looking in the wrong place?
