Northwestern only accepts 5 in non major classes... nothing else and no 4s.

Northwestern doesn’t let you get out of classes. You just get bumped up a level.


I think they will take 5s in non major non required classes, like as a general humanities class for an engineering major or music bfa major.

I believe my kid had one or two AP 5s accepted, but it wasn't for anything that mattered.

This is more generous than most Ivies, which don't take AP credit at all.

Common. A 4 would be a shockingly low standard at a top school. For some schools, not sure I would even advise a student to skip an intro class with a 5, in case they get in over their heads in the next class. Sometimes it’s better to repeat, knowing it will be harder than the AP version, but that your preparation will make freshman year transition a little bit more manageable.
