I know MCCPTA is collecting feedback on open lunch. I am guessing it is because they have heard MCPS is considering changing it.

They are reviewing it. The Open Lunch policy is the only agenda item on the BOE's Policy Committee meeting this week: https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=DTVMQR5B9B1F

They usually solicit feedback after the decision has been made. So you can take it to the bank that open lunch will be banned for SY 26-27. This of course is a reaction to the shooting at Blake which had nothing to do with open lunch. These leaders are terrible.

If they are going to ban it, what will they offer to Walter Johnson kids? Just stay hungry??

God forbid a kid packs a lunch from home.

School sells lunch or you pack. Most kids aren't buying $20 lunches daily. Or, maybe they can bring in a catering company just for privileged kids.

How tiny are HS cafeterias that they can't fit 400ish kids at a time?

At 400 kids per lunch period, it would take 8 lunch periods to feed all the kids at WJ

Half of WJ kids are moving to Woodward. Most schools with closed lunch seem to make it work.

I mean you have the option to pack him a lunch as well. Don't act as if McDonalds is the only ones capable of feeding your child.

Those kids aren't eating McDonalds...

I will say that when Northwood HS was still in SS, there was technically a closed lunch but half the kids left anyway to go buy lunch outside. The administration turned a blind eye and there were no consequences. Kids aren’t doing it so much in the new location perhaps because they are less familiar with Bethesda

Fellow WJ parent but neither of us got the poll.

It was from the PTA not the school

Blair has almost 3000 students and closed lunch. Kids sit at tables in the hallways or in classrooms. They survive somehow.

Another Blair parent here. Open lunch has worked out fine.

The most surprising thing about this thread is how many parents want their kids to buy lunch! It adds up. I don’t even buy lunch for myself at work.

I meant closed lunch!

My kids all went to WJ. The open lunch was a great way for them to develop a little independence and responsibility, not to mention budgeting. I was really glad they had that and can’t imagine WJ without open lunch.

Guessing that Woodward won’t have open lunch so they see this as an opportunity to end it.
