They will enter the MLS next tier system in some way. They will first close the deal then decide how to break it down. One idea that was presented is all the MLS Next HG clubs affiliated with MLS teams will have their own division and the only way to play in it is to get on one of their teams. After that it would be the current MLS Next HG teams, then the next tier is the MLS Next AD teams (this is where the current ECNL Boys will enter) then after that there will be some 3rd tier that will include RL, NAL, etc...and for tournaments/showcases any team could enter at any level they want if they are accepted and this is where the MLS Next HG would play the higher level MLS Next AD teams. The divisions outside of the MLS Next MLS affiliated teams like DC United would have promotion and relegation of some sort.

This is an incredibly stupid take and must be a troll post. If this was the OP, I would not be proud my wife was in this room.

There are 30 MLS franchises. That is an incredible amount of travel ($$$) for a league that does not invest in scouting or development at the critical developmental ages before 14 (at least in the DMV). This would take one of our biggest weaknesses, the size of our country, and exacerbate it.

I am not a fan of ECNL but Arlington and VDA not walking into HG would be complete comedy.

We are on a 2nd team like this now at U12. As others have said, its extremely difficult to move up. We don't even get to see the 1st team practice. They get more practices, better coaching and more fitness. Their practices are more intense. We have been w our club for 3 years and they have only moved 1 kid up in 3 years, all the while they have taken 6 outside of club players onto the 1st team.

We tried out at 3 other clubs and received 3x 1st team offers. All these clubs are only interested in maintaining a 2nd team roster and never letting players off it.

-I thought people were crazy for saying it, but we have seen it 1st hand this year.

I'm curious about the more practices as we haven't seen this yet at same age. So teams 2-5 get 3 practices a week, but team 1 gets 4?

Doesn't make sense to me as current boys ECNL teams are much stronger than MLS B teams. Locally MLS B teams are just former RL or EDP teams, same players new shirt patch. Shrug.

I wonder if this will change over time. The strongest boys RL teams seem to be the ones with a top team in ECNL (or just two clubs merging to form ECNL). Maybe boys will choose AD over being on a second team that never gets a real shot at being moved up? Or AD over a club that tops out at RL? And of course the clubs with HG have strong AD teams there just aren’t as many of them.

But AD is "second team" the same way "RL" is "second team"....

Right, but MLSNext is stronger than ECNL. So the second team in a stronger league may be perceived as better than second team in a weaker one. Seems like that has happened in other areas. Here it will probably depend in whether Arlington and VDA stay ECNL.

We saw that last fall, the 1st team got 3 practices, plus a 4th practice comprising fitness, agility, ball skill session w their coach. Then over the winter, they got prioritized weekly indoor sessions, where outdoor practices had to be cancelled. They are paying more in Club fees, so that is where some of the money goes.

nope AD teams have been beating ECNL teams all over the country. Just not top 25 teams. Our AD team has 7 former ECNL kids who got burnt out. And didnt want to give up HS soccer

If you have a son get them to a MLS next HG team if they can make it. Outside of that right now ECNL and AD are a toss up but seems like ECNL boys is will die out over the next couple of years if the ecnl clubs can't pull players away from the AD clubs. For girls ECNL is still the bigger draw in the DMV but with so many of the clubs switching to GA over the past couple of years the landscape is quickly changing. Its great for the girls overall by increasing the pool of kids that could potentially play college when older but it does dilute the pool of players so regionally and nationally it will be tougher for either to really compete over the long term.

I can see a scenario where it will raise the overall level of players in the area but that will remain to been seen. It certainly seems to have raised the competitive fervor among parents lol

If you player wants to play high level college soccer get them on an Ecnl or MLS next AD team or higher. On the flip side its ECNL girls or GA. Over the next 2-3 years i don't see RL or GA's new aspire league really doing much in this area...other parts of the country have different landscapes

Somebody showed on DCUM earlier that on boys side ECNL and MLS1 not including actual MLS academies has similar numbers playing in college and similar numbers of top teams. No reason to chase an MLS badge.

100%. Very significant number of ECNL boys players play in college - 30% of D1 and 50% of D3. AD (former EDP and NAL) can’t pull those numbers despite the badge - that’s because they are second teams of former EDP NAL and eCRL players- it will take 5-7 years for AD to make inroads - and the presence of HG AND academy isnt helping as they are essentially tier 3. There is a significant delta between AD and ECNL 1st teams. Especially in this area.

Seriously lol...its ADs first season. They will be playing in all the same MLS Next Showcases as well which are the biggest showcases. Denying what's in front of you won't change that
