ILs always leaving leftovers at our house - just venting

This! Lately my Buy Nothing group is nothing but food leftover from parties and gatherings, and it always goes quickly!

They don’t want to take the brownies, pie, dip, etc. that they brought home, then I ask everyone and say we don’t want leftovers so if no one wants it, it’s going in the trash.

Then I get a trash bag and throw them away in front of the people who brought them.

You only have to do this a couple of times until they start bringing less or cave and take it home. .

Why on earth would you offer to host with this unnecessarily aggressive attitude? My goodness.

Op, use your garbage disposal

My plumber would disagree. He says Thanksgiving is his busiest time of year with people putting food down the disposal, causing backups.

Nice leftovers or weird leftovers?

I make empanadas and/or stuffed sandwiches from TG leftovers like turkey, corn pudding, stuffing, mashed potatoes etc- because it is not so bad. They do taste like TG in a bite. https://fabeveryday.com/2023/11/leftover-thanksgiving-empanadas-easy-turkey-empanadas-recipe.html

What I hate is leftover desserts. Nobody wants to eat that. I dump it in the woods behind my house for the deers and other small mammals.

No they wouldn't. They don't want leftovers from strangers and often are pretty healthy eaters.

I'm pretty sure they would take the beer if offered.

It probably depends on the station. My friend's husband is a firefighter and he says they enjoy the treats.

I get takeout containers in bulk from restaurant supply company, and then every single dish gets divvied up based on number of households/people. And everyone gets to carry back their goody bags with all the leftovers.

No one argues about it.

Alternatively do a sign up for contributions. List 2 desserts, 1 salad, 2 mains. Remind people to only bring us on the list

This is what needs to happen. So many billions of people on earth are food-insecure, and so many millions of Americans are food-insecure. It would turn my stomach to witness so much waste. I think if your relatives watch as their bought food is thrown away into trash bags, the message will have a lot more impact.

It might turn your stomach, but most people wouldn’t care.

Why emulate shitty people?

Throw it out or offer it up on buy nothing. Those people will even take a 1/2 eaten cake as long as you didn't put your fork in it.
