When someone says they work in national security

I immediately assume they’re trying to sound important.

Otherwise they’d just say “I’m a GS-something or other working stiff at a 3-letter”

How is that "less important"?

This is the answer but idiots kept the thread going with their nonsense for pages...

What it means is they work for a three-letter-agency and be clueful and change the subject and talk about something else. I hate people who feel the need to “spot the spook”. Or the person upthread who was determined to figure out “which office in State”. My answer “oh, I’m a boring government worker bee, ha ha, and what do you do?”

They spend their days doing government stuff- meetings, meetings about meetings, drinking coffee, looking at and redoing org charts- govies love a good org chart, doing some BS mandatory training, and writing- metrics, reviews, applications for ladder climbing up the GS gravy train.

I find a lot in Defense and the IC are MAGA types who despise all things big government, save their cushy jobs, their plush military retirement and their disability pay. Apologies to those with real disabilities/ailments related to their service. No apologies for those grifting with their 100% “disability” who are out hiking, biking and playing softball every weekend.

You're a janitor ?

Pretty much this.

I worked in “national security” as an electrician in the Navy, fixing light switches in conference rooms

The problem is that you need to report them of they ask too many questions. No one wants that hassle.

People here know that if someone is like “I work for the State Department” or similar and don’t offer any more details, it means they’re at a 3 letter agency. People outside this area do not know that and it makes things occasionally uncomfortable when traveling. A very well meaning and friendly but not quite “getting it” British guy we met on a cruise would not take the hint that I just could not talk about my job all that much. My husband and I had to really steer around that conversation!
