Free Lunches for all for 2026-2027 SY

Whether a busy family working two jobs just needs a break from packing lunch or a kid is in financial need. We have a share table at our school as well which has been great. Kids drop the packaged items they don’t want and someone else always eats it.

The COVID lunches were the more inedible than the current lunches.

And part of the problem with those was that they were all free. You did not have extra $ coming in from paying kids to help boost returns. They were terrible.

Please stop bashing the school lunch. Could it be healthier? Sure. But when you don’t have another choice, hunger is worse.

Correct.
Just like people that take public transportation pay for roads.
People that never go to libraries contribute to that
You fund the fire department even if your house is never on fire.

These fools, man.

I'm 100% for providing free lunch generously and making it easier for families to qualify, but I'd rather pay for lunch and talk about providing better quality food for all than make lunch free for families who don't need it.

I believe it relieves the administrative burden of linking applications to student IDs, verifying incomes yearly, etc. The savings in administrative costs would likely offset the costs

We are upper middle class and my kids eat
School lunch. It's not going to kill them and it's a good equalizer. They describe what their friends bring and it's honestly not much healthier. They both like and eat from the salad bar.

Yes please!
School is free, why not include the lunch? I think it hilarious that we fund public schools through taxes, yet *some* people balk when it comes to including the lunches.

I swear, if we tried to pass the idea of libraries now there would be massive opposition

This is an excellent point.

I don't mind paying taxes to feed kids. Tax me more if you need to to make the food healthy and maybe even a little appetizing.

As long as we don't hire a gaggle of DEI specialists to make sure the menu is culturally sensitive, inclusive and representative, count me in.
FCPS wastes so much money on that BS.
Just have one vegetarian option and two regular options and call it a day.

+1. This. This is why we can't have nice things.

I’d rather they just give parents a choice—free lunch or tax refund that would cover groceries, though economically that may have inflationary effects. Or have parents who want to opt in with their taxes do that (like give $X extra for the fund). Or just maintain the status quo.

My kid doesn’t like school lunch and I’m not a fan of giving the government more money. And nothing that’s marketed as “free” ever is.

This sounds even worse, "you have no choice so eat this unhealthy food or be hungry". So far even people who are against free lunches for all support better lunches for those in need.

One of my dc eats school lunch weekly and we can afford it, and there’s no need to waste money/ resource on people who can afford it. Should just offer free lunch to kids & their families whom are really in need.

Yes, let's just let parents do less and less for their children and let daddy state raise them. Feed your own kids please.
