Really? That's terrible. Why the high housing costs if you can't use them. At my school plenty of students stayed to study/work/simply didn't want to deal with travel chaos.
I know of colleges closing their dorms over winter break, but have never heard of them closing dorms for Thanksgiving.

I think "a lot" is way overstating the case here. I doubt any school closes all dorms for Thanksgiving.

My trimester school when I was in college definitely didn't close. We didn't have money for an extra flight so I never went home for Thanksgiving.

It’s actually quite rare for dorms to close over short breaks like Thanksgiving. Many people do not travel for that short a period.

At BWI. Website says security is taking 1-2 min (when I went through). Board above security checkpoint said 10-14 min. In reality it took me 45 min to get through—reminds me a bit like holiday travel.

It'll be a tough holiday for THE ENTIRE COUNTRY not just college kids if there are massive flight delays.

Plus, the vast majority of college kids (2/3) live within driving distance of home so they are likely to be unaffected by airports. Primarily elite, wealthy kids will be flying in from their private schools for break. The general consensus in this country (and the globe, really) is that we don't feel sorry for rich people.

I’ll bite. Vanderbilt closes its dorms for the entire week. Pretty sure other schools do too. I don’t think it’s arrogant to want your kid to be able to fly home for Thanksgiving, but I understand your broader point.

My flight into DCA got canceled 3 hours prior to takeoff (AA). Rebooked on two new flights (first is delayed, and the connection is way too short), so who knows when I’ll get back to DC.

Airline staff and travelers are equally testy.

People with international flights have been impacted. I’m in the American lounge and a woman just pitched a fit and they are rebooking her on a United flight to get her to another city (Miami) to make a connection on Iberia.

They seem to be shifting people to other airports with connections.

My spouse is in DAL trying to get back to DC on SW. Flight was "on time" and then 30 minutes late and now (allegedly) departing at 4:44 CT, so we'll see what happens in 2 hours. I am hoping that they make it back safely tonight.

All of DCA looks like a shit show, though. Lots of delays this afternoon.

Well the “clear” resolution was to fund the government to Nov 21 and Johnson is keeping the House on vacation. I thought it would be solved after the elections but now it may go on way in to next year.

Weird, the NYT reported that international flights were pretty much not going to be impacted.

Sounds like in that situation it was the connection to the international flight that was the issue

But also entirely possible that the plan was no international cancellations, but in practice they can't keep to that perfectly.

Yep this is how most places do it. You have to let them know you are staying, but you can stay. Often dining is limited to one location and only certain hours.

I’m on the west coast trying to get back to dc on a direct flight. Been delayed twice and now we’ve just been told we’ve been given a landing slot in dc during a particular hour. They’re calling it an air traffic delay. Looks like we all need to be prepared to sit around the airport for a few hours every flight.
