Oh shut up already

Nope. Lots of people already hurting out there and Trump keeps on dropping s*** on them.

Assume this won't end until sometime around Thanksgiving, maybe.

And so many feds out there who are being forced to work with no pay will eventually not be able to afford food or the gas to get to work.

Do you understand it would take only 5 senators to change their vote to reopen government? There is no freaking way most people can hold out until Thanksgiving. I can't hold out until Halloween. Today we were sent a letter that we can use for to request extra time to pay rent or mortgage. That's a joke. Banks are not interested in your stupid letter.

You realize that even if the government reopens, the CR is only until Thanksgiving.

It doesn't matter. If the Dems pass this one and show that they will vote for what Republicans propose without any negotiation, then that's that. There's no conflict in November because Republicans will know they can just wait it out and Dems will fold to all their demands. This is pretty much the last stand for Dems as the minority party doing anything, ever.

I'm a fed who's not getting paid and may get RIFed, and I'm the breadwinner of my family so I get how much it sucks to be a pawn. But it's bigger than our paychecks.

Nope. Freedom isn’t free. It will only get worse if they win.

What do you mean if they win? Do you understand that Dems control nothing? Just what do you think we win by keeping the government "shut down"? (It's not shut down FYI it's just Feds don't get paid.) Healthcare premiums are going to skyrocket and people will be left without insurance when they can't afford the premiums. We cannot stop it.

If Dems control nothing then why do they need to vote to open the government?

Are you in middle school?

No, I'm somebody who understands that a party can't have both zero control and sole responsibility to fix this mess by caving. Either they're needed (and therefore have power) or they aren't (and need do nothing).

It is not game over. The house won't be able to pass a budget nor will they agree to a full year CR. Even if the government reopens, it is going to be a constant stream of short CRs with brinkmanship everytime.

I want and need to go back to work, but I don't want them to cave. If Dems cave, we probably don't get backpay (despite the law) and the layoffs and recisions will just increase. Meanwhile, there is growing pressure on Republicans to resolve this.

There's no chance this ends before November, regardless - among other reasons, I think the White House wants a "record" duration.

News for you: layoffs and rescissions coming your way no matter what. What pressure do you think Rs are feeling? None.

DP. Trump is feeling no pressure, but the Rs in Congress are. See MTG’s comments today. You need to stop panicking. The Ds cannot give in on this.

I need to stop panicking? WTF? I cannot get another job, I have no other source of income. You people are nuts thinking everybody can sit around for months with no income.

Did you file for unemployment? I have friends who have already gotten their first checks. They will return it if they get back pay.

Yes. Multiple things will happen soon. People will find out what their health care premiums will be. Pretty much everyone will be impacted one way or another. People who never had difficulties before will struggle to afford their typical Thanksgiving plans — both the meals and travel. Many of those same people will realize the impact of Trump’s tariffs coupled with corporate greed on pretty much everything connected with their holiday celebrations — especially Christmas gifts, meals and travel. Large numbers of voters will realize that they’ve been lied to. At least some of them will press their Republican representatives (especially the 2 year term Representatives) to explain why their America First tax dollars are being spent on airplanes and Argentina. Either the Republicans will see the light re: Healthcare or there will be violence of some sort from MAGA.

Obviously these are just my unsupported opinions, but Winter brings with it hefty expenses. At least some of the people who voted for Trump because of egg prices are going to be furious and possibly desperate soon.

tldr: Late November/early December.

This. MAGA is self-centered so it has to have direct impact and ruin their personal holiday plans. No jumping on a plane for the big family party and most definitely no shipping $1000 in pre-wrapped Amazon gifts ahead of arrival.

If healthcare premiums go up, people may finally start to understand what is going on and why the Dems holding their ground on this was important.

I agree with this post, especially what’s in bold. I’m a fed also and see the need for Dems to hold strong.

Dems don’t need to give their votes on a CR without getting something in return. That’s how things work. Republicans have given nothing. Dems are doing their jobs to try and use the limited power they have to rep their constituents, republicans are doing the opposite.
Anonymous
Republicans should exercise the nuclear option and reopen the government without Democratic votes.

It is frustrating though because even if the Rep give in, they can just rescind the funding later as they did this year...and even if that doesn't happen, the SC has told the president he does not have to spend the money as Congress authorized.

I hate to see the Dems just cave but I also want to get back to work because long term I don't think anything is being accomplished.

A lot of people in the private sector have been in your situation for months. They won't get back pay either.

what part of "can't get another job" did you not understand. As in, not legally allowed to get another job.

Well you can if you resign. But I’m not PP, and I’m not suggesting you should. Hang in there, you will be made whole eventually. The PP is a cruel infamous that equates this situation to private sector layoffs when it’s nothing like that. Tell me the last time 1 million people were laid off by a single employer? Or worse, told to work without pay indefinitely if they wanted to keep their jobs?

During the 35 day shutdown I did get another job.
