MCPS suggests postponing Crown High School opening for use as holding school

Anonymous
There is a huge development of new townhouses and retail happening right across from Wootton. The proximity to schools is going to be a major selling point for that development. No one is moving Wootton to. crown and using Wootton as a holding school. That’s ludicrous.

Hopefully not! They should just open Crown as planned because the wootton community would never support moving kids over to the crown area permanently

The prior poster makes some good points about visiting to see if Wootton renovation is needed down the road. With the decline in enrollment if that continues downwards for a decade we won’t need the two ones plus a renovated Wootton, Magruder and Damascus. We’ll probably need 2 of those 3 however. If MCPS renovates and expands QO, that’d also add capacity.

The bottom line is MCPS has an insane amount of capital needs and ensuring we can budget for them all is important. It maybe that the replacement of Wootton is a short term sacrifice if enrollment isn’t supporting it.

No way they are moving wotton to crown location permanently, the city of Gaithersburg will not agree to it at least. And with crown residence still attending Gaithersburg HS while wotton (crown high school) is right around the corner. And there will be another boundary studies address that issue, and the wotton will not be the same wotton.

This is a reasonable plan as what do they do with the students when they refurbish the schools. They should also keep Woodward as a holding school as well.

I think using crown HS as either a holding school or as a replacement for wotton HS is a probable solution to deal with decline in predicted enrollment and cost savings. I have been to Wotton HS, and it is old. The changing room area looks creepy. I have heard parents at wotton HS complain about the school condition. With limited budget and slow economy, there is likely no timeline and budget to renovate wotton HS. Crown HS and wotton HS are like 11 minutes away, and they are not too far away from each other. Current zoned wotton HS families would fight a war if they are zoned to different HS. It is more logical to consider the option to move the whole wotton HS populations to new Crown HS locations either temporary (for renovation of wotton HS) or permanently ( make Wotton HS as holding school).

If you think you've heard complaining now, just wait and see what happens if someone kicks the hornet's nest and suggests getting rid of the school.

THIS

It would not be “Wootton” anymore because all the kids from Rosemont, Crown, Fields Rd, etc would be entitled to attend due to proximity. No way in heck they’d ever move Wootton there permanently. What a Pandora’s box the superintendent has opened with his comments

The plan as discussed at the meeting last week was for Wootton to occupy Crown as a holding school while its building was being rebuilt. The idea of a permanent move to Crown wasn't part of anyone's comments.

Yes, the new home for Wootton should be on the Crown site, and call that Wootton if they like. Then the old Wootton building (by the old Weis is it?) should be the holding school. That is the idea.

This is the development plan that I’m hearing will pick up steam.

+1 this doesn't seem to be part of the plan because they need Crown as a holding school for multiple school renovations, not just Wootton. And didn't they say Wootton is the most urgent?

Scroll up a few pages and there are lot of comments about this, I just don’t get it why people suggesting move Wotton permanently to Crown HS location. And with Gaithersburg HS and QO HS actually over capacity

Because they are trying to rage bate Wootton parents. Wootton in in Wootton partway serving a dense suburban area, moving a 1000 students to Crown while Crown students all go to Gaithersburg is about as smart as getting rid of Blair magnet.

There have been anonymous comments on DCUM, but neither Taylor nor the board members suggested anything about moving Wootton permanently.
