DD worried after incident…

Maybe a dumb question but why can't you film? I can see not wanting to encourage performances but isn't it helpful for the truth to be recorded?

My daughter is 15, and didn't go to the pep rally. She went to the media center to relax with friends. Yours is welcome to join!

Also, why does BCC disrupt the school day with so many entirely useless pep rallies? My older kids attended Walter Johnson and they either didn't have them at all, or very few. That school is more academic than BCC... BCC doesn't have their priorities right.

Our public schools have become war zones. Wake up.

The thing that has me most perplexed about this is if this was still principal Mooney people would be calling for him to be fired immediately but I guess it is ok because it is principal Yates?

You know fully well that the issues with Mooney were much greater than this type of incident. Mooney would still be principal if he hadn't lied in a letter the community and then cost the county hundreds of thousands of dollars, plus legal fees, when the lie came out in his own court testimony.

Why would your daughter wear a wig? Cancer?

They broke up the fight and dispersed the crowd around it quickly and a community letter was sent out immediately, before rumors could get out of hand. That's the difference between Mooney and Yates.

Because they're not filming it so they can go to admin and show them who started the fight, etc. They're filming it to have a viral video on social media (and kids are also fighting to have their fight recorded and going viral on social media).

Yes, this 1000%

So many good reasons to ban cell phones in school.

If you think about it, what are ppl thinking of BUT this? Def not academics

And, the outcome of all this is literally the most robust definition of cyberbullying. Schools are complicit in this malfeasance if cell phones continue to be allowed.

Video evidence contradicts the MCPS CYA version of events

Apparently a ton of kids filmed the whole thing and somewhere there's a video of the weave going airboren. I'm not sure if a weave is the same as a wig but if OP's daughter isn't getting into fistfights at school on a regular basis, her wig is probably safe.

Was it true that one of the Asst Principal slipped on it ? Hope they are okay too and no students were injured.

I also hope the AP wasn't injured.

I got in a a fight in HS. I looked out the window and a girl sitting next to me said "What are YOU looking at?" I said nothing, and she said, "So you think I'm nothing?" and then sucker punched me in the hallway after the class was over. People pick fights for no reason sometimes - whether they're amped up about something, or just have a screw loose.

Just go over with your DD the steps to take IF her wig is snatched. Maybe just like always having an emergency tampon she wants to carry an emergency scarf or hat if it's about keeping her scalp covered. If it's religious point out it wouldn't be HER sin but the sin of the person who yanked off her wig.

Sigh. You're so foolish. High school is anxiety-provoking as it is, and you never want to make it worse as a parent. Also, you want to educate kids on correct risk assessment. There is a FAR HIGHER likelihood that fights will be picked between people who already know each other, than complete strangers, your experience notwithstanding.

OP does not need to say that this will never happen to her child. She needs to say the risk of this happening is so low that her DD does not need to worry about it.

Seriously. Have some common sense.

There are mentally unstable people that assault classmates. At school most people are people you know

Np. Why is this your business?

I showed this thread to my kid as an illustration of how bad drama can be. Response: "I want to see the video!" Ugh.

Reading this thread assures me that we made the right decision to pull our kids out of public school.

Terrible way to treat a girl with cancer. I'm glad the school has counselors available afterwards.
