the government being so dysfunctional or the GOP's complete abdication of governing? |
Sure, let’s introduce legislation to force members to pass legislation in this Congress that does anything but pass legislation.
“Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., and Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, plan to introduce legislation that would keep lawmakers in town until a short-term government funding extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), or spending bills are passed to avert a partial government shutdown.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/gop-duo-unveils-plan-force-congress-face-consequences-shutdown-looms?twclid=2dtiz9qk1arswpcvsbwc38h24 |
" I cannot recall the govt being so dysfunctional as it has been over the last decade. "
Oh? Really? When has the government been functional? Not in the last 30 years. |
SHUT IT DOWN
SHUT IT DOWN! DEMS DO NOT GIVE IN SHUT IT DOWN |
Exactly. Let the dust settle. And see which parts were even missed |
Federal courts? TSA? FAA? Loan/insurance processing for farmers? Assistance for seniors applying for SS or Medicare? Tax collection/enforcement? DOJ? (Might be an improvement over trump II) Funding for rural schools? Title I schools? Civil rights investigations for students with disabilities? What about medical staff at veterans hospitals working without pay? Ditto food safety inspections? Military? Border operations? FBI? Some of those activities would continue because of potential safety concerns but they wouldn’t get paid until congress passes the spending bills. Idiots like you who have no idea what your tax dollars are actually spent on are the problem. |
“Excepted” employees still operate: National security and defense military personnel Law enforcement Federal corrections Customs and border protection agents Air traffic Control TSA National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center medical staff Emergency medical care and public safety Disaster aid and power grid maintenance crews Certain court functions Mandatory spending services: Social Security and Medicare benefits Veterans' health and benefits processing The U.S. Postal Service (funded by its own revenues) |
And those excepted service staff do not get paid until congress passes appropriations. How long would you show up to work without a paycheck? |
ss and Medicare benefits continue but seniors can’t get their questions answered or issues dealt with or may not get their benefits started.
From AI: Limited SSA Services: The Social Security Administration will reduce services not directly related to benefit payments. This could include: Difficulty replacing lost Medicare cards. Longer wait times to contact customer service. Delays in processing new benefit applications and benefit verifications. |
Is this true? I'm active duty and curious if military is already funded. We've been a part of shut downs at least once that I can remember. |
Not sure, this Congress said over and over that they were going to prepare and pass a dozen separate spending bills so there wouldn’t be another giant CR and I’ve seen no evidence that they have actually done anything. |
Yup. Who has two thumbs and stopped the government from property functioning? This guy. ![]() Other PP is right that the past decade has been worse, though. |
The money for DoD in OBBB did not cover military personnel salaries and expenses, so you would also be affected by shutdown. |
Essential services are forced to continue, with delayed pay. The social debt you build up from greater pollution, riskier banks, etc won’t be immediately apparent. |
72% is spent on Medicaid, Medicare , SS, and interest. 14% defense discretionary. 14% nno defense. Nondefense: ![]() |
