DD is insisting on being called "Cherry"

What’s her middle name? I can see why she wants to get rid of Sharon but I’m sure there are a thousand names better than cherry.

You’re her mother, and you can call her Sharon, because that’s her name. But what she what’s her friends to call her is up to her. I wouldn’t care.

Sounds like there's consensus here. Sorry OP, Sharon is a horrible name to lay on that poor girl. Cherry is a cute nickname.

There are plenty of my kids friends who have old fashioned names. I'd see if Sherry works, close to Cherry and without the connotations.

Cherry is so cute! These days kids like to pick names for themselves. I get that for some parents there’s a bit of a grieving process with this, but ultimately it is her decision at this age about what she wants to be called.

I am the PP who wrote this. I should have added that I went through this exact same thing, where my DD changed her name (except in our case, after a three-year campaign, she got me to agree to change her name legally). She has been absolutely delighted with her new name, and although I grieve her birth name in private, with her I am nothing but supportive.

That's a pretty awful name, too, which is how I'm sure she got to Cherry.

Yep, the only Sherry I know is my 77 yr old aunt.

I think you need to (1) recognize you don’t get to control what she has her friends call her and (2) tell her you’ll support her choice of a new nick name and (3) tell her honestly that lots of folks will think of her virginity if she goes by Cherry. How about Cherie or Sherry or Cher?

Hey. We are in our 60s, thank you very much.

What is her middle name?
Please don't say Lynn, or Ann, or Marie.

Also, just curious, why did the name Sharon come from when she was born? It's an unusual name for a 15 year old. I'm a big fan of older classic names, but there's a set of names for older and younger Boomers that haven't received their "historic license plates" yet. Kids born 15 years ago were starting to be named classics from the 20s through 40s, but not the 50s through 70s. Sharon is a big Boomer name- odd that you picked that unless she was named for a relative.

Her legal name is Sharon. But as of today, you will call her Cherry. Got it?

Also all Boomer names.

And..no body will be thinking of virginity. That is ALSO a Boomer thing.

Signed,
A BOOMER

I actually...think Cherry is cute? Reminds me of Apple Martin and Plum Sykes.

Yeah, but there's a difference between naming your daughters Edna, Sharon, Gertrude, and Blanche vs. naming your daughters Sarah, Hannah, Lily, and Clara. Not all old fashioned names are equal. (Fun fact - I included the names of my grandmothers in the ugly name list!)
