What are the differences between Middlebury, Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin

Anonymous
All the schools are pretty similar and one would have a similar experience.

Middlebury has by far has the best reputation in the corporate world and best name recognition abroad.

No comparison between Bowdoin and Bates. Our Bates tour guide was very low IQ and the info session bragged about how they have some mid-semester block were kids get to read in hammocks. It seems like they offer a LOT of opportunities to low income students. There is no way in hell I am paying for my kid and you to read in hammocks for credit. GTFO

Would not agree at all. Maybe if the corporate world is a narrow sliver of finance. Most industries view bowdoin better than middlebury.

?? Bowdoin spends much more and has a higher % of first gen low income kids.

Midd has been dinged due to its ownership of the Middlebury Institute in Monterey. It’s been a drag on finances and dilutes the college’s financial resources and endowment per student. And over enrollment over the past few years hasn’t helped with the student/ faculty ratio.

Hopefully the new president, just announced, will help turn things around.

Who got in and is going Fall '25?

Bowdoin by far the most prestigious.

Bowdoin is similar to Williams and Amherst.

Middlebury is similar to Hamilton and Varsar.

The other two are similar to Bucknell.

Amherst, Bowdoin, Middlebury and Williams all have a very similar academic profile with avg SAT scores between 1500-1520 and acceptance levels of 8-10% or so
Hamilton and Vassar are just slightly below them with acceptance levels of 12-18%
Colby is probably slightly below this set but they haven't released a CDS in awhile.

Bates is a level down in terms of admit stats but similar in selectivity to Hamilton and Vassar. Their academic stats are far above Bucknell which is also an excellent school.

So there’s a pipeline to Wall Street?

Middlebury is above Amherst in Niche rating. Middlebury has a lot more to offer than Bowdoin. They own their own ski mountain, language depart is world renowned, alumni run Wall Street, and sports teams typically spank bowdoin. Also Middlebury has many more students which makes for a better social scene.

Nothing, They are all exactly the same. Exactly.

How do they differ?

Like you, we have never been there but they are sporty rather than preppy. Outdoorsy.
