What is NOT ugly architecture?

It is mostly just a snarky website where a woman insults houses.

Many people cannot afford an architect and custom home builder. Many people do not care about these things. Many people just want enough space for their kids to have a bedroom and somewhere to play.

The woman who runs the website is just being a jerk.

No, there are actual architectural principles explaining why some houses are ugly or not, and she does a great job explaining them. For example:
https://mcmansionhell.com/post/148605513816/mcmansions-101-what-makes-a-mcmansion-bad

You don't have to agree with her on everything (I don't) but it is overall an educated and principled approach. It's just easier to read than a textbook.

Most people buy houses that aren't custom, which is why poor design is so inexcusable. A builder or professional architect should understand these principles, but so many don't even try. It's not the buyer's fault.

She is super snarky.

She’s a class-ist a hole.

She makes defensible observations.

She says some cutting things about suburban life, and she's younger and lefty-er than DCUM. (And so far as I know she doesn't have kids, so yes she has different priorities in housing.)

Her points about architecture are valid nonethless. And, there are many large expensive houses she will acknowledge as good design. Go walk around your neighborhood and look for the center line on each house, it's illuminating.

I wouldn't say I'm a colonial person, but these designs are in different leagues.

The upper home looks like a professional design with a complete plan. The lower thing looks like a toddler jammed together 4 different homes.

The lower one looks like a Gingerbread home after it's been consumed and evacuated into a toilet.

I’m in Ashburn, there are so many copycats of these houses all over. They just scream pre-housing crash 2008. I don’t understand the appeal. Like, we’re in Ashburn, not in the city or McLean or anything.

Frank Lloyd Wright styles are nice.

if you are a boomer, but if you are under the age of 40 the so called new builds mcmansions are desirable

Desirable does not mean they’re attractive. Just means people have bad judgment

Houses that mix architectural styles are ugly. Like Palladian windows on a “Tudor” house of a “colonial” house with a Victorian turret or other touches.

Yes, often it's the mixing of styles that I dislike. Or as in the McMansion example pic posted previously, when the house has all the things versus a select few that enhance the house.

I don’t even think you like the sears homes or the four square. You just think it’s cool to say that. Those homes are like the uggs of the time. They were literally factory made. You’re trying way way too hard.

Factory made or common does not necessarily mean ugly. Ikea for example makes a lot of great designs. The sears homes were beautifully and thoughtfully proportioned with lovely but not overdone detail and varied enough to be charming. Get over yourself.
