Why? We were asked what middle school girls wear, and many of us concur this is in fact what they wear. OP ASKED. We weren’t saying “All girls must wear this or else!” |
This. OP asked for suggestions of what 7th grade girls wear and those of us with 7th grade girls told her. No one said she had to get all the things, but it’s stupid to suggest the 7th grade girl uniform isn’t some combo of the items that have been suggested. |

Hi OP! I posted earlier that I have a rising 7th grader who also wears the wardrobe discussed here...we are in the Midwest as well (Chicago area). I read all the posts and if you and your DD like Target you should be moving out of Cat and Jack and into Art Class, which is their tween line. Sounds like your DD still wears Cat and Jack with the sequin animals, etc. Art Class has good options at the Target price point. You could also do thier athleisure line. Dick's sporting goods has been good for us as well, or google "butterfly shorts" on Amazon for some comfortable options.
I don't think this is about social engineering anyone to be popular, but there is a "look" that a lot of girls have and as others have mentioned it's developmentally appropriate to mimic that in middle school. She also doesn't have a phone and loves four square. |
It's 100% developmentally appropriate to mimic how your peers dress in MS. In this area, that uniform does happen to be:
Jean shorts Boxy tees Crop tops Oversized tees Lululemon anything!!!! Nike Pro shorts Hoodies Crocs Nike socks Leggings or sweats in the winter. Some will wear flare leggings. Nike Air Maxes Walk up to any MS in the area and you will see hundreds of girls dressed like this. Look closer and you will see the Kendra Scott necklace or gold hoop earrings. It's a phase and they grow out of it. They'll find their own style soon enough. For now, this is the uniform. |
Op, I help my kid with fashion. It’s cruel not to and to pretend what you wear doesn’t matter. My seven year old wears sequined shirts, my middle school child does not.
Start with shoes. Nike or converse are good pics. Yes to white sneakers by Nike. Black conserve work. Crocs are a good second choice. Don’t care that she’s price conscious - that is coming from you because she learned it - throw the ratty, ill fitting clothes out. Uggs might work but my kid seems to be over them so idk. Jeans are pretty easy. You can go to the Gap, my kid is skinny and tall. Target sometimes has jeans. Madewell has nice clothing generally. Band tees are ok. Look at urban outfitters and similar to see what’s in. I just got an Olivia Rodrigo tee. Don’t let your husband’s musical taste guide too much here. He can wear his own tees. Abercrombie has nice stuff. They have great winter coats that usually go on a good sale. Simple and stylish. You can supplement with Target but get a few nicer things would be my recommendation. Make sure her water bottle is Stanley or the like. No unicorns, etc. You want your daughter to feel confident and mature. Get her the clothing to match. |
I don’t think art class. Looks very junior. Try some wild fable instead. |
lol, no you cannot take a tween shopping one time. This will take several trips. I take my daughter 1-2x a month at least. You go have a nice time and buy lunch part of the way through. You try new stores and new styles. And you don’t complain as a mom. You show interest and enthusiasm. You need to toss the backpack. |

Once she starts finding her preferences, it becomes easier.
Should you have a child who has typical proportions/sizes and enjoys shopping, it may become a way to bond. My DD is not in either of those categories (00L bottoms, needs high waisted and at least 5 inch inseam to cover her properly and she never has enjoyed shopping) so we do mostly online shopping with trips maybe 4x-5x/year to Aerie, American Eagle, Uniqlo etc to gain ideas for the upcoming season. We also may do some items from Target or Old Navy, with pickup or delivery an option for more basic items. If your DD is not a big shopper, make the trips brief and make sure you are doing something fun afterwards, ie lunch, movies, bookstore, etc. Our shopping trips are likely 1 hour -- or less -- and then it's off to try a new place for snacks or lunch and/or meet friends. Georgetown and Pike & Rose are among my DD's favorite places to quickly shop and dine, provided that is helpful. |
Jcpenney check out Thereabouts line. She can browse online at her leisure and add items she likes to the cart. You know her sizes and returns are fairly easy at Jcpenney and Khols.
Walmart brand Justice might be up her alley too. |
This. In the 7th grade, my DD would have never worn short shorts or fitted tops. It was boxy tees, joggers and Jordans. She finishing up the 8th grade she’s starting to branch out a bit. Cargos or 4 inch shorts, crop or fitted tops, still wearing Jordans. Take her shopping and let her pick out her own things. Don’t push what’s popular or things out of her comfort zone. |
Tweens do grow fast but no one needs to be shopping monthly! Maybe op's dd is not into consumerism, and that's ok. A lot of tweens are environmentally conscious now. My middle schooler's friends are all about thrift shops. A couple try to find that uniform a lot of the popular kids have, but several of them try to craft their own style. |
I don't know why people are pushing OP to make her daughter go outside of her comfort zone. This is totally unnecessary. It sounds like she has friends who like her for who she is, and her wardrobe isn't going to affect that. Thank goodness!
My middle schooler is tall but thin and still fits into size L kids clothes (unfortunately she has long legs and a lot of shorts are really short on her). She still wears Cat & Jack, Old Navy, H&M and she seems to fit in just fine with her friends as far as I can tell. Maybe we live in a different area than some of the moms that are posting here but there doesn't seem to be a middle school uniform where we are. She still wears colorful shorts (her favorite right now are gauze-like fabric shorts from Target in mint green and hot pink), the flowy athletic shorts from All In Motion @ Target or Old Navy, and fitted t-shirts or tank tops. |
As long as OP is aware that she's asking very wealthy moms about what the girls in their very wealthy areas/schools wear. We don't live in a very wealthy area (we live in a somewhat wealthy area, LOL) and although some girls wear what people have described definitely not all of them. I looked at those Lululemon shorts and I don't think anyone I know is buying their daughters $68 bootie shorts. $28 bootie shorts, maybe, but wow, the bougie ladies here are out of touch with the proletariat! |
