âNahâ ??? ![]() Your profound ignorance barely merits a response. However, you keep insisting on perpetuating the lie TJâs admission is now based on a lottery. |
I am a different poster. The new TJ admissions policy is as close to a lottery you can get without it being a lottery. Put a low GPA bar, one simple math problem and admit based on a few essays that are hard to differentiate because the scope is very limited (Portrait of a graduate!!). Take out teacher recommendations which god forbid might identify a few exceptional students for whom TJ would be a good fit. Of course what do teachers know right, they must a biased racist bunch right? |
I believe athletes have to maintain certain gpa, which at TJ is considerably higher than base school. |
Back to original poster. You don't just sign up for Gonzaga or St Johns - you have to apply. Also, their sports teams are much more competitive than TJs.
As to the value of playing sports at TJ, my kid played 3 varsity sports and was recruited in their primary one to a T10. Their time management skill were such that college was easier than TJ. So yes, for some kids academics and sports are a good mix. For others, not. Know your kid. |
This is absolutely true. The worst thing for a college is to admit a kid who shows up, does nothing but study for four years, leaves with their diploma, and then never re-engages with the school at all or inspires anyone else to donate or apply. This is one of the biggest reasons that TJ kids with otherwise stellar academic resumes struggle with elite college admissions. They don't present themselves as someone who will donate to the school or inspire someone else to do so. |
This is largely true. JV boys soccer also will have very competitive tryouts. If you are a female athlete with any experience of significance in just about any sport, you can have an extremely fulfilling athletic career at TJ. |
Before HS, DD used to be more of an indoor type, preferred books and gadgets. However, after joining TJ soccer, fell so in love with the sport and being part of a team, that she never missed a practice or game. |
For what it's worth, TJ Girls Soccer finished as National District Girls Soccer runner-ups last year and are the #1 seed entering this year's tournament. They have a legitimate chance to make states this year. |
OP here. Just wondering because of the destinations of several Gonzaga students include their recruited sports and TJ doesnât seem to have that as much.
Not a troll. Just busy with lacrosse and tennis this week and exhausted and overwhelmed. |
TJ usually has several athletes every year who are recruitable to play sports at least at the Division III level. Usually, those students will get into a school that is stronger academically than the schools that are recruiting them. Itâs very rare that TJ students will turn down academic prestige in order to extend their playing career. |
Why bother responding mine when you offer nothing but nonsense. As someone said above, lowering admissions requirements and tossing away relevant information about students make the current system a lottery at best. They can have a much more transparent system while incorporating diversity and equity goals. Students should simply have points for each factor like essays, GPA, advanced STEM courses, teachers' recommendations, and bonus points for DEI factors. |
I know several kids who were recruited for cross country/track a few years back at places like Georgia Tech and MIT. I also know a number of kids who walked on to other Division I teams that same year and were successful on those teams during their four years in college. |
Not really. Division III level from base school requires dedication, even if it means academics take a backseat. However at TJ, students are aiming for a different kind of division, more like decimal division, especially when that C or D drops on the report card. |
Apparently, you are making an effort to be clever here, but it is, sadly, not at all successful. The fact is that some TJ kids do get recruited to plays sports in college and some are able to walk on to teams once they get there. I personally know of TJ students in both these categories. Itâs not hard to talk to some TJ parents with actual experience in this area if you call the school and ask to be contacted by parents who are willing to discuss the topic with other parents who have questions. I suggest youâll get better information from TJ parents than youâll get from this forum, particularly since there are some posters here with an axe to grind. |
There should a slew of public announcements if TJ kids in fact received athletic scholarships to division iii. Can you share a link? |
