I sat on the lawn with my DD for an hour and I didn’t see anyone “preppy”. But hey if your kid doesn’t think it’s a fit, find another school. You don’t HAVE To go there.

My child didn't want to go there either as they thought it was "too preppy" and just not their vibe. Given where they ended up - I can see that. They have since visited friends who go there and like it more but are still glad they are not there. For teens - "too preppy" is more than just about clothes - it's about everyone seeming very mainstream and bland.

This. I think "preppy" goes beyond just wearing plaid and bows. It means "mainstream, basic, etc".

And yes, UVA feels like THIS to kids. I know because I have twins who are like this---very mainstream. They spend way too much time on social media and on following trends. My son is very much a "bro." They LOVED UVA--felt like they found their people there.
They are not quirky, artsy, intellectual, progressive, individualistic, etc. They are basic. They are very smart and do very well in school but sometimes we (the parents) wonder if they they have an original bone in their bodies.

(I would never say this out loud or to them but that is who they are). They loved UVA.

This is OP. This is exactly what she means by preppy. Everyone exactly the same and carrying the sam Stanley (or whatever the new water bottle is).

All 16k of them.

Surely you understand the desire to whittle the list. No one is saying she has to go there.

I dont know why people think this is a dumb question. We have visited UVA and we also have several friends with kids there and have family with kids that went there. It is preppy and has a lot of cliques. A certain kind of kid thrives with that, but I know of two in my neighborhood who found it overbearing and they were actually quite popular in HS. In some ways it is probably. not that different than some of the Southern state schools where the girls all go out with LV handbags and is a little less obvious than that, but UVA is for sure quite preppy and less willing to accept kids in the margins. If you are comfortable at a country club, you will be fine at UVA. Its an excellent school but of all the schools we visited, it had a vibe we did not see elsewhere (my Stem kid did not like it which was not a surprise to me.) I would be ok going there because I went to a preppy private HS so I know how to navigate that, but I can see how it can be too much for a lot of kids.

You say all
of this, yet admit in the first sentence that you have no direct connection to UVA. Right ....
