IT's "unreasonable" only because the school is relatively small for a flagship (yeayeayea, I know technically it is not called a flagship but you known what I mean), which means only 4K get in a year for the entire Commonwealth, PLUS it takes 30% OOS and international, which is not what the other big state systems are doing (North Carolina, Texas, Cal limit OOS to 10% or less) so that drives down the number of possible seats from 4,000 to less than 3,000. So there's a lot of jealousy on this board. My DD was never even a contender so we never applied for her. That upsests some taxpayers. It's reasonable from that point of view. |
DP well, where do kid’s interests lie? Econ, Maths, Bio, Stats, Physics, Phil |

WM is ranked higher for its quality of instruction teaching undergrads
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/undergraduate-teaching WM #6 UVA #48 UVA has a long way to go to claim that it’s the top public. |
I agree it’s beautiful. Love the drive down there. But kid is choosing smaller private (7k vs 17k) ranked higher. I will miss not making those drives. |
Ask your kid to do a minor in whatever subject they are interested in or none at all. It doesn't really matter in the short run. Don't know if it does in the long run. At my son's school (he's a junior) kids with no minors and lower GPA than him have gotten much better internships (think Stripe, Citadel, etc.). Some kids are graduating in 3 years with no minors and getting jobs with FAANGs. Those who do minors are mostly doing it because they love the subject area or have long-term plans. One kid did a minor in biology and has gotten into med school. Another did a business minor and is going to Harvard for an MBA. Another did a business minor to have access to the business clubs so he can eventually work for a trading firm. But a minor is not necessary. At the end of the day, they will all be entry level programmers who will be judged on how well they do on the leetcode tests. |
OMG. I can't stand the UVA boosters, but the WM booster is getting just as bad. |
Guys pay attention to Wisco, it’s in a top economic location, very populous state. |
My kid just chose UVA over W&M but it was an extremely close call and they loved W&M. They decided to go for engineering/CS at UVA. I will say that W&M dedication to undergraduate teaching is undeniable. It is super impressive. |
Thanks. I was just wondering based on the comment about minoring if there was any insight based on experience. She’ll figure it out! Maybe applied math, maybe physics. |
So I guess we all agree that it is just marketing and the most realistic case is UVA will continue its decline? |
Apparently you think so and in your world that's all that matters. |
I wouldn’t say it will continue to decline, but it never will become the top public university in this country. Too many academic weaknesses to overcome. |
