It absolutely is not. My DD is in dance but has friends in cheer. It's completely different and the competitions are completely different. They do not overlap in any way. OP is asking about competitive dance. |
Try tap or hip-hop |
My DD did ‘company’ this year and it was nothing like what has been described here which sounds so extreme for little kids. She goes to dance twice per week (each and hour and a half) and the focus is on ballet, tap and jazz. She performs three times throughout the year. In the Nutcracker during the holidays, one competition, and at the end of the year on the recital. The competition costume was 120 and we paid like 30 to enter or something like that. We drove because it was only an hour away. Our studio doesn’t teach the dumb faces but I did notice some of the dancers from other studios at the competition doing the faces.
A couple of her friends from school do it with her and as part of company the studio host multiple social events throughout the year as well. The girls had so much fun and they are learning to dance. DD has always loved to dress up and perform in front of us (since she was 2) so it’s a good fit for her and has really improved her confidence being up in front of others performing. This studio isn’t in DC, as we don’t live there anymore, point is you can find good studios that don’t take it to the extreme. |
