Age versus bedtime

My kid's elementary school starts at 7:30. Very very few my kid's classmates participate in weekday sports or weekday activities outside of low-intensity stuff like art, music, and Kumon-type tutoring.

In contrast, my brother's kids go to an elementary school in the same area that starts at 9:00 and according to his observation, half or more kids are in weekday sports, including his. So I'm guessing it all depends very much on school start times.

I used to be envious that his kids' school starts later, but it also dismisses later, which pushes everything else much later. Pick your poison?

My kid has been sleeping 9pm to 7:45 or 8am since K. It allows us to have family dinner together and leaves time for activities that last until 6:30 or 7 twice a week, with a shower after. She can get ready for school in 20 minutes (it's just breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth).

I'd way rather have time with her in the evening than at 6:30 in the morning. That's when I workout and shower. It's my time.

What's for breakfast? I don't think there's a way my kid could eat a whole breakfast, clear his place, go upstairs, brush teeth, change clothes, and come down to get lunch/snack/drink into his backpack and put shoes on... all in 20 minutes! He does take the bus so he needs to be outside at 8.

Breakfast is scrambled eggs on a tortilla and some fruit. Or toast with peanut butter and fruit. It's not a three course meal. Takes about 10 minutes to eat (at the counter, clearing your place means handing it to me so I can stick it in the dishwasher). 5 minutes to brush teeth and hair, 5 to get dressed (if that). I get

This is where alot of the problem is, Schools should not be in session before 8:30am or after 3:00pm, 7:30 is just too early.

My kid has to wake up at 6:30 and takes 20+ minutes to eat even a small breakfast. Not all kids can quickly shovel food into their mouths like yours. The gag reflex is very strong in the morning for many people, and if school starts early, you're f'd. None of this is the fault of the kids or the parents. Way too many judgy parents here with late school start times who don't understand that other parents and kids have a much more difficult morning routine due to circumstances beyond their control.

I agree, but I have zero control over it. My kid and all her classmates have to go bed much earlier than many kids and that's just the way it is.

Kids are 4 and 8. Bedtime is 8:30-9 dependinf. That means in bed at 8:30 and they read books or play quietly then. Both are up at 7. Even on weekends.

Not as a single person but you would be surprised what enough parents acting together can do, unfortunately though it's hard to get people to work together on issues like this.

K-2 my son attended a school that started at 745 and it was great. Wake up, out the door, parents go to work. We moved to fairfax county and the 920 start is so late, i hate it. It really messes with working parents, and most kids wake up early. He is awake at 7, and could spend his morning learning instead of dragging through the afternoon hours like he does now.

Just commenting that not everyone agrees that later start times are a good thing.

My 9 year old daughter goes to bed at 8:30 and is up at 7 am on her own. Even on weekends. Occasionally she will stay up until 9 pm for special occasions or even in the summer but she never sleeps past 7:30 am no matter what so we are pretty consistent. She gets into bed at 8 and reads until 8:30.

Kids need a lot of sleep. The smug judgmental parents here making fun of parents with early bedtimes at 7-8pm don’t have a clue.

Our kids go to sleep at 8pm and wake up at 6:30. That’s only 9.5 hrs of sleep. It’s not excessive.

I’m surprised that the teams near us catering to 6-7 year olds are scheduling games at 6:30. That seems so late for kindergarten players.

Nuts

+1 There is no justifiable reason to have a kid in bed before 9:00pm or sunset.

All the elementary kids I teach say they’re tired all the time and can not focus on class. It’s not nuts to have kids go to bed earlier. Honestly, it’s no wonder we have discipline problems at school. Parents who think 9pm is appropriate bedtime for a 6 year old is probably letting their 10/11 year old stay up until 11pm. They can’t focus!!!

Everything depends on the time they wake up. My kids get up at 8am, so bedtime is also later.

Two DDs here, 4yo and 8yo. We start bedtime between 7:30-7:45, lights out at 8:15.
Older DD's elementary school (LCPS) starts at 8AM, but her bus arrives at 7:30, so she gets up for the day at 6:45. Younger DD is in daycare and gets up at 7AM for a dropoff time of 7:45.

Both of my girls are morning types, so they don't sleep in on weekends, either. Everyone is usually up by 7AM then, too (unfortunately...I prefer to be a night owl and sleep in, but my kids have other ideas).
