GW

Just no. Their postpartum care is atrocious. There’s no way that a place providing such horrible postpartum care is providing good care during labor and delivery. I would never deliver at GW again.

Can you switch to INOVA Fairfax on 50 and 495. I had my first at GW and the next at INOVA. Get has 5 stars and INOVA 9++. INOVA was so much better!!!!

Drs. Gaba, Bathgate, Keller, Marko, Jamshidi, Madkour, Martinez, Sheth, Gallagher, Phillips, Cigna are all still there. Yes, there are new people there but they did not seem inexperienced. Also, the midwives are seasoned as well. This seems to be the group that takes on the high acuity cases. I switched back to GW because essentially my Sibley doc said if something went west with the pregnancy he would transfer me there…so, here I am at GW. Maybe I’ll get one of the new rooms…

You’re not able to see Madkour, Sheth, or Cigna for OBGYN.

You should definitely avoid Dr. Sarah Cigna.

What happened with Dr. Cigna? I met with her previously and liked her.

Still no sonographer (or NSTs) as of November. I had my scans done at a private MFM practice so that I wouldn't have to go in to DC (I had all my prenatals in Bethesda)

What practice? Maybe I'll do that if ivf is successful- had probably 8 ultrasounds last pregnancy and can't imagine going to DC for all

Many, many doctors failed me - failed to recognize symptoms, signs, care needed and kind of left me high and dry in the aftermath. There was one doctor who followed up with my in the postpartum period - recognizing that my horrific situation had led to severe depression (which no one ever told me at the time). She has since left the practice. I was with the OBs, not midwives. Every practice is going to have a story like mine, I’m sure. Most people I know had good experiences at GW - it’s the hospital almost all doulas (which I had) recommend. I did not have a good experience and will never go back.

Really sorry to hear this. Is this a common condition or something that you think was a result of preexisting and was more complex? I do not mean to sound dismissive but I would have huge concerns if they didn’t recognize HELLP or pre-eclampsia vs. something that a hematologist or something would be more familiar with. Still, a huge failure on their end to not recommend proper care if you’d been filling out the PPD surveys and they did not recommend any help.

Coming back to this after a long time, but I am this PP and missed this question.

The doctors for my next delivery described what happened to me at GW as malpractice - pretty much every doctor I have seen since has the same opinion!

Multiple doctors missed many signs of my water breaking early, dismissed my concerns, etc. and that was just the beginning of what transpired. I ended up with severe complications, multiple hospitalizations etc, for what should have been a routine delivery - I had no complications or preexisting conditions. Honestly, I am lucky it was not worse given the negligence.

To add insult to injury - the follow up from my life altering delivery was absolutely abysmal.

I could have written this about my GW delivery, too. My pelvic floor is destroyed thanks to their negligence. What they allowed to transpire during my birth was horrific. I sustained significant pelvic floor injuries. When trying to find care afterward at other specialists and OBs they literally did not even believe the length of time I pushed or what I experienced during my delivery there. When I delivered my next child many years later at a different hospital with a scheduled C section I almost cried because I felt so well cared for, and after the birth I could just forget about the hospital stay and focus on my recovery and my baby. I’m still haunted by my delivery at GW and my body will never, ever be the same again. Stay away.

Very glad you had a successful second birth!!

I too dealt with some serious negligence at GW during labor & post partum that left me wondering how I had ever chosen that. Definitely would not have had a second baby there if I wasn’t one & done.

I had a C-section 10 years ago and wouldn’t go back to GW.

My baby developed an infection during delivery and was immediately treated with IV antibiotics so we were separated after birth, which was horrific, but I know could have been much worse given the situation.

Due to my complications, I was hospitalized alone on the labor and delivery ward without my baby and no visitors allowed during late 2020.

I felt like I pushed for far too long too, resulting in a 3rd degree tear.

I had a horrific experience at GW as well. Oddly enough, it was awful in the exact opposite direction as most others experienced: rather than engaging in risky behavior to avoid a c-section, they pressured me into a c-section that I suspect may not have been medically necessary, and I had an extremely painful recovery with pain even a year after the surgery (possibly because of the skill level of the doctor who performed the c-section). After the surgery, even though the baby was fine there was no skin-to-skin or any effort made to let me hold or even see my child. I first saw the baby in a photo on my husband's phone. Hours after the birth, I had to call out and ask someone passing by if they could please hand me my child, who was placed too far for me to reach (and I was still paralyzed from the waist down, so I couldn't stand up). I had nightmares about the time I spent at GW.

A very recent positive review. I just had my second delivery at GW this was a middle of the night emergency C-section. The care I received was top notch, from the medical team who determined that delivery was necessary (most likely saving my baby's life) to the anesthesiologist, to the post partum nurses and the NICU team above all. I had one or two nurses that weren't amazing, but they were more than offset by all the other nurses who were incredibly responsive, caring, and professional. I was happy with my first delivery with a medically necessary C-section two years ago, but this time around was actually better. This includes my recovery. Two weeks out and I keep forgetting that I had major abdominal surgery.

This sounds like a very positive experience. Were you already admitted and then needed the emergency C section or did you show up middle of the night? Congrats on the LO!
