Vienna vs McLean: culture differences?

That's more of a thing in the Langley HS neighborhoods than in the McLean HS neighborhoods. It's not just money, although the Langley areas are generally wealthier; it's also about attitudes. We knew people who lived in Langley Oaks, which is within walking distance of Langley HS, and they still sent their kids to private school.

If McLean Hamlet was in Vienna it would be in the bottom half of neighborhoods (above bottom 20%). It really is not an expensive area (relatively speaking). That being said, Mclean does have the best neighborhoods/enclaves in all of NoVA (probably even DMV) if money was not a concern (e.g. hard to dispute Reserve, Langley Forest and Bellview/Brook, but I would also say Chesterbrook Woods and I am sure I am missing more).

This thread is a bit pointless though.

Nope. McLean Hamlet is more expensive than the median Vienna neighborhood. Vienna still has lots of old houses and it also has a lot of similar subdivisions that are less expensive than the Hamlet.

I'm the PP you're responding to, and I agree with you. We are in walking/biking distance to Langley and our kids & their friends often use the field and track, but don't go school there. I do know that a lot of kids who go to Langley are from quite far away, the zoning is strange IMO.

Langley Oaks is one step up from The Hamlet, but many prefer the Hamlet. Different personalities.

This really depends on the street and neighborhood that you live in. Some parts of McLean have a lot of kids and sidewalks, some have spread out homes and older people.

Most of McLean does not have sidewalks. Langley Oaks has them on one side, and I believe the Hamlet has them (the neighborhood abuts a major road).

This is what happens when people are too polite. Your comments re McLean Hamlet being better than all of or majority of Vienna was already a joke. Taking it now to comparing McLean Hamley to Langley Oaks and claiming anyone would prefer McLean Hamlet is delusional.

No one would prefer Hamlet over Langley Oakes. They should not even be compared. Hamlet is more comparable to Pimmet Hills than anywhere in McLean (I think parts of it is in McLean).

It's Langley Oaks, not Oakes.

I could see some people preferring McLean Hamlet over Langley Oaks. It's closer to Tysons and has its own neighborhood pool. The houses in Langley Oaks are newer and larger, but it's kind of sterile. Of course, the neighborhoods in Vienna like Langley Oaks (like some of the areas in 22181 off Lawyers Road) cost less because they are in Vienna rather than McLean, zoned to lower-ranked schools, and further away from DC.

As someone who looked in both of these neighborhoods, the houses in Mclean Hamlet are MUCH MUCH smaller and older. Lots of older split level homes in Mclean Hamlet vs bigger colonials in Langley Oaks. Langley Oaks is also more expensive - even the older, not updated homes go for over 1.5 now.

Both neighborhoods do not allow tear downs as far as I know, so the housing stock is aging. I would rather live in a new build in the McLean HS district than in one of those neighborhoods. I guess some of the homes are renovated though.

Even so, I live in the Langley HS zone and plenty of people in the neighborhood use the public schools. It’s not like you would be the only one sending kids to public there.
