School calendar

Having a long summer break is based on old agriculture practices and not really an efficient way to educate our children. Plus, I would move the end of year testing to June.

Are you sure?

But most of the debates over the contours of the school year are premised on the historical myth that summer break stems from a time when children needed to work on the farm — a myth that biases these debates and ignores the challenges that prompted the introduction of summer vacation and that still exist today.

I wouldn’t mind a shorter summer by like a week if we could get fall break. I would love for the first week of November to be off like NJ.

I LOVE the two week winter break!

So do we, HS sometimes need this break more than ES kids.

My niece and nephew go to school in the Charlottesville area. They take the SOLs and then are out of school before Memorial Day. From a testing perspective, this makes a lot of sense. Plus, they get several additional weeks of instructional time rather than “play time.”

The calendar in general doesn’t make sense to me. Start school after Labor Day and schedule the SOLs accordingly and then be done. I guess the state mandates the SOL dates, which complicates things.

I don’t understand why we start early but then end so late in June.

Days off between the start and end dates.

So many random days off this coming year. Childcare is going to be a logistical challenge. The SB is so incompetent.

As much as I dislike this new calendar, childcare will not be anymore of an issue than in the past. SACC will be open, all of the Kindercare/Taekwondo/Winwood/etc places will be open, whatever people currently use for their before/aftercare will be open. If parents are not using regular before and/or aftercare, then they can use drop-in care for the day at places like Taekwondo studios or the NZone.

Because they decided we need Jewish holidays off.

And Muslim and Hindi and Greek Orthodox.

And Chinese New Year! FCPS just can't take enough days off.

Yes, let's only take off for Christian holidays.

Did they take off for any Christian holidays? I know Christmas falls during the winter break, but they don’t take a day off specifically for that reason. I can’t think of any others.

No, it's not. It's based on wealthy new yorkers wanting to get out of town for the hot, humid summer.

You voted to have spring break tied to Easter, which is infuriating for non-Christians who would like to take an affordable vacation at some point during the school year. It's impossible to find affordable flights for thanksgiving, christmas, and now easter breaks. Thanks a lot.

I want my kids in school without random days off. If that means longer breaks, I am good with it.

Oh, I didn’t vote for that. Did you? I prefer the fixed spring break not tied to Easter.

I thought next year Easter falls during break just because of the wall the calendar works out.
