Derwood is an area just north of Rockville and there are some nice subdivisions in there with very affordable homes...and the elementary schools seem to be good. It's a quick commute to the Shady Grove metro... zip code 20855. |
I think that really depends on the specific school. E.g., New Hampshire Estates ES is roundly criticized. And I would rather be zoned for Blair HS than Northwood HS. |
So move to Takoma Park: TPES, PBES, TPMS, MBHS. |
We live in 20902, 1/2 mile from Forest Glen metro. Easy commute downtown. Tons of families in our beautiful neighborhood, very active civic association, a farmer's market, parks, trails, etc. Homes cost $350-$500 depending on the size. Feeds into Oakland Terrace ES, which is very highly regarded but currently overcrowded. A new elementary school will open in a couple of years to help ease the overcrowding. So that is a wild card. Middle School is Sligo Creek MS, which I don't know much about. High school is Einstein which some say has a bad reputation, but the kids I know who go there love it and are very good, civic-minded, down-to-earth kids who do theater and sports at the school.
Plus there is an excellent, affordable Catholic elementary school, St. John's. It's near some of the Montessori schools mentioned earlier, too. And our excellent daycare costs 1/2 the price of other places our friends use for their kids. |
I live in the west end of Rockville (code 20850). Schools are great (Fallsmead / Robert Frost / Wooten), there is a local pool and lots of park space - heck my kids caught tadpoles in the creek a couple of weeks ago! Also Rockville is an independent city and has a lot to offer. Several neighbors work for the fed and they usually drive to either the Twinbrook or Rockville metro to take downtown. I even know a couple who take the bus to/from the metro. |
Another vote for Olney - straight north of Silver Spring. We also are gov't and couldn't afford Bethesda. If there was a house at the higher end of our limit, it didn't last more than a day and it had lots of offers on it. Olney is very family friendly, lots of parks, great schools. We love it here. |
Olney is really beautiful, too, with lots of unspoiled land and scenery. You really feel that you away from the urbs. |
What are the nice neighborhoods in Olney (maybe even with a walkable swim club close by?).....houses $500,000 or less?

Tanterra. |
Where are those houses in Chevy Chase?
