What's your HHI + NW and where do you shop?

Casual/basics: Target, Costco, Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, Uniqlo.

Work/formal: Eileen Fisher but usually from Factory Store or ebay/Poshmark, Nordstrom Rack.

Shoes: Sierra Trading Post, Nordstrom Rack

But let's face it, I work in an area not know for its fashion sense (DC) and in a profession known mainly for its bad fashion sense.

What profession is known for its bad fashion sense?

Teachers

Ha ha ha!

I sub at the school where my kid goes. One of my kid's teachers dresses like she just stepped off a runway. She has impeccable fashion sense. She looks out of place because she is dressed so incredibly. My kid asked her teacher where she gets her clothes and the teacher said almost exclusively from Poshmark and eBay.

My kid snapped a picture of the teacher's outfit one day last week. I found her dress on eBay, it was Chloe. Her shoes looked like Balenciaga boots.

WHY?? I could see maybe consignment you can occasionally find great things, but TJ MAXX and Marshall's have have had absolutely nothing of quality (or fashionable) for at least a decade. Curious why you don't spend more since it isn't a budget issue? And if you really don't care, what brings you to the beauty and fashion forum?

Uhhh... I am not that PP, but I mentioned TJ Maxx myself. You have been to the ones with a "Runway" section, right? Even those without that dedicated space have some purple label items that fall into that category. I've bought Missoni/M Missoni, Helmut Lang, Valentino and more from TJ Maxx (and Marshalls-- given they have the same parent company, they sometimes have some good stuff too). Shoes from Stuart Weitzman to Jimmy Choo.

Maybe your problem is that you haven't been to TJ Maxx/Marshalls in a decade? Although, no-- I bought some of my high-end stuff there 10-15 years ago. Sure, it's not in copious amounts, but it's there. And even more that is just a hair lower in "prestige," like Rag & Bone or Rachel Roy.

I do miss Filene's Basement and Loehmann's, though-- they were even better.

HHI - roughly $400K. NW - upwards of $10M.

Me: Shopbop, Neiman Marcus, The Real Real, Revolve, Intermix, Nordstrom. I'm a sucker for sales.

Kids: J Crew, Vineyard Vines, Nordstrom, basics from Marshalls or Amazon

Husband: personal shopper twice a year for a refresh. They send clothes to the house, he tries them on and we ship back what he doesn't like.

HHI $350K/$5M NW

I shop Costco, Target, Amazon, TJ Max. I don’t think I’ve ever paid retail when I have gone into a mall type department store (and that was even pre COVID). I buy DH close from same stores, suits from Mens Wharehouse. Kids the same but they mostly wear their sport team shirts.

For clothes it’s mostly target. Occasionally Walmart, Nordstrom, is H and M but that’s only if I can’t find what I need at target. I do buy Name brand shoes.

I am clearly not into fashion. I definitely spend more money on hair and makeup than I do on clothes. And I never give myself a budget when it comes to home renovation.

How is this possible??

NP, but what is with DCUM and its failure of imagination? Off the top of my head, this can be for many reasons unrelated to terrible spending habits (although "not budgeting home renovations" might be giving you a clue here). But there are tons of possibilities, like: tons of student and/or medical debt/expenses, solely supporting other family members, having only recently and exponentially increased income, or being very young and having had little time to save (impressive to be making that much in HHI, though).

How is it possible?? that people don't even try to imagine circumstances other than their own??

Ha this is so true. PP here and this happened almost every time I share the stats (which has happened maybe 4 times). In our case, our HHI went from 200K to what it is now in a matter of 5 years and in the meantime we paid off 160K of student loan debt, spent a lot on preschool for two kids, and bought a house. (We are in our mid-thirties but we had kids early)

HHI $2m, NW $8m. Poshmark, mostly. For the kids, Old Navy and Target, or Poshmark. DH is a programmer, so his uniform is jeans and tshirts. I do have a black tie event coming up and am considering going to Saks for a special dress, which will be $$$. Honestly I would normally go to Poshmark for that, too, but I don’t know how the nicer brands fit on me.

All that said, on Poshmark I like nicer brands for myself: Maje, Sandro, Alice+Olivia, Brooks Brothers, Kate Spade, DVF, etc.

Dumb question: is there a trick to shopping at poshmark? I’ve looked at stuff on there and it seemed confusing.

My Midwestern state TJ Maxx certainly doesn’t have a “runway” section. They don’t even have a non polyester or real leather shoe section

Not Pp but another Poshmark shopper. I do NWT and also check the comments. I had one bad experience with a local over a cashmere sweater and no response to my purchase but otherwise all has gone well.

I believe it, my brother was a teacher for a few years and he dressed really really well. He likes clothes and had help from the bank of mom and dad.

I haven’t had bad luck with it, but I’m not sure I would use it for cashmere. That wool requires maintenance and it’s not the kind of thing that people get rid of if it’s good quality. Someone else chime in, but for things that are classic and part of a capsule wardrobe, I’d probably buy those new. I use Poshmark for brands where I already know how they fit.

Oh and kids clothes. My kids have very few clothing opinions. But they do wear their clothes hard so I am not going to buy them nice stuff new.

HHI 1.5M, NW maybe 5M, late 30s

Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Paige, Joie, Boden, Equipment, Theory, Rag and Bone, Alala, Alo, Splendid

Also occasionally Rue la la, Off Saks, Nordstrom Rack

I’m surprised by the answers here and wondering if there are a lot of posters who don’t usually frequent Beauty and Fashion? For Dcum I expected a lot more answers like mine and instead everyone is so frugal! Clothing is definitely my guilty pleasure.
