Steam cleaning and cleaners

For some really bad pet stains our upstairs carpet needs steam cleaning. Woukd you rent a machine from a pet/grocery store or have a service come by? Also if these machines are used by multiple people, how do you ensure things like fleas, etc don't transfer to your own home? Any responses or recommendations welcome.

We have a spot machine and a and find they were worth the purchase, having animals. We can get to stains before they really set, and can clean the carpets whenever we want. We had two bad experiences Ina row with the rental machines, so decided to just purchase. It certainly makes the cleaning less of a huge task, as we can just do it when we feel like it vs. making it an "event".

If you're renting, Some stores don't clean very well.. Always check the unit before you bring it home.

I have a spot cleaner, but do get a service every 6 months or so.
