DS is a legoholic. Right now they are sorted by color in unattractive, boxes. I remember seeing infomercials about a Roly-Bin years ago...but can't find it online. Is there any super efficient storage system made for lots of little pieces? |
If you wantthem all sorted by color of type of piece, this idea won't be of any use.
But if you want them all together in one place: We take a big plastic Rubbermaid-type bin, and line it with an old sheet so the sides of the sheet hang over the sides of the bin. Then fill the bin with the Legos on top of the sheet. When the children want to play with the Legos, they gather all four corners of the sheet and life evrything out of the bin, and spread the sheet out. The sheet becomes a kind of playmat. I tell them to keep all the Legos on the sheet. When they are done, they just pick up all the corners of the sheet and put the whole thing back into the bin. Usually they will keep a few constructions out on a table, but the rest of the Legos go back. This avoids the "dumping" scenario. |
Are you talking about the Roly Kit show in the following links?

Hooray! You found it! That thing is genius! I'm ordering 2.
Although I like the sheet idea too...easy cleanup. I probably have enough legos to fill 2 roly kits and a big plastic bin! |
I know -- Rolly kit for al the little "special" pieces and sheet in a tub for the regular building pieces! |
How about something like a hardware storage bin and rack set/storage organizer like this http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se...7782&catalogId=10101 or this http://www.hudsonfasteners.com/strg/strg_rtshlf.htm for all the parts? I also like the sheet in the bin idea. |
The sheet thing is what that guy does who runs the lego camps around town. It really works.
I can't imagine sorting by color. Wouldn't it be better to sort by function (we have a lego problem here, too)? |
Zumbamamba - Before you order, I wanted to let you know that I've seen the rolykits at the As Seen on TV store in Ballston. |
Tell me more about Lego Camps in town.....(-; |
tool boxes from Home Depot...multiple sizes... |
There's some guy who does kid events with legos. He runs a camp at the JCC every summer (in Fairfax), but does other stuff elsewhere. If you check out the JCC summer catalogue, you will see what I'm talking about. That's all I know.

sweet! so many options. I'll probably swing by the place in Ballston. DS likes them sorted by color, he likes to build huge ships and spacecrafts with symmetrical color/design. (my future engineer, I hope.)
Oh I did not know there was a lego camp...my son would go crazy for that. |
Legoland for the legomaniacs... and others too. |
