I am planning to let my friend borrow my car that I will leave at the airport for him (and family).
Any suggestions for how to leave a key for him? Does anyone know if there is a concierge service at airports for something like this? I want to avoid 'hiding' a key outside of the car. |
OP here. - and by concierge, I mean like a kiosk to leave / pick up an envelope or package. |
can he or someone can't drop you off? or have him pay for your taxi service? that's the least i could do if someone lends me their car. |
I would honestly just leave it behind the tire for him. Those lots are sea of thousands of cars and it will be fine. |
That's not the issue. I need to get him the key. |
Do you have a spare key? Mail it to your friend ahead of time. |
magnetic box on the undercarriage somewhere? |

GE sells a magnetic locking spare key holder (it's a number dial lock) that you can buy at the container store. Just put the spare key inside, send the code to your friend and stick it to the undercarriage. |
I'd just leave the car unlocked and the key under the mat. The chances of it getting stolen among the 1000s of cars in the lot is practically zero. |
People also dont usually steal cars where from a lot where you have to pay on the way out. That add a whole additional level of camers, witnesses, and expense. |
+1. If it's a lot where you have to drive through several levels and stop and pay on the way out -- that's somewhat of a deterrent to thieves as it takes too long to make a getaway. Plus even if there is crime going on, statistically the chance is next to none that it will be your car rather than someone else's. If you're really worried, you can try to park it in an "inconvenient" part of the garage for a thief -- like right near the elevators where people are bound to be coming and going -- or right near a fence facing a road if it's an outside lot bc a line of cars waiting to get it would notice/hear someone breaking in. |
Just tuck it up under one of the bumpers. Alternatively, I suppose you could hide it somewhere else in the parking garage or the airport, like under a garbage can or behind a chair. But there aren't many good hiding place at airports and if anyone sees you, it could create suspicion and problems (for perhaps obvious reasons). So I''d just tuck it in the bumper. |
Hide the key in a cd book under a
Coat. Leave the door open. |
Remember to leave the parking ticket with the key or he won't be able to leave!
I have done this a couple of times as my husband and I use to travel a lot for work and we would leave the car open, hide the key and ticket under the mat and give each other detailed instructions of where to find the car. Never had any problem. |
