We just attended the Holton-Arms Open House this weekend, and while we were impressed with the school, we were surprised by how short the students' skirts seem to be. We're not advocating dowdy, below-the-knee pleated skirts for students, but the skirts were so short that it seemed that it would be nearly impossible to bend over without flashing. I know that short skirts are the style, but I would think that three inches or so above the knee would be sufficient to avoid looking frumpy...

| no daughter at HA but i have seen plenty of girls from SR, Visi, Holy Child and Bullis who fit the same mold. |
| Few friends have daughters that go and skirts were just so short. Don't really "get it". I would require my DD's skirt to be longer. |
| That's the only thing you noticed at the open house that you feel worthy of comment? |
| My daughter is at a private school where the dress code for skirts is officially below-the-knee. I let her "fudge" a bit and wear skirts probably two inches above the knee because the others are just so nerdy. But I definitely would not send her out in a skirt that makes it impossible to bend -- or even sit -- without flashing underwear! |
| You can wear leggings |
| OP here -- no, it wasn't the only thing worthy of comment, but everything else made sense to us. The skirts seemed to be a strange anomaly. |
| OP - but you get your money's worth. |
| Huh? I don't get it. |
| ^ I think PP was saying the quality of education is worth the money. |
Talk to us again when our daughter is 14 and you have bigger concerns than skirt length. Frankly, I don't love all of my daughter's fashion choices but there are very, very few that I find worth a battle.
OP, many (most?) girls wear athletic spandex shorts underneath their skirts these days, so they wouldn't be flashing underwear even if it came to that. And FWIW, I also think it's kind of sad that you focused on the girls' appearance rather than on more important things. Pretty typical of our culture these days, sadly. |
I guess nobody remembers the 60s. My mom had no problem with the short skirts I wore in the 80s because she wore the 60s version. I think what girls wear today is fine. There are more important things to worry about. |

I agree with OP that it seems surprising at first, with the philosophy of these schools. At the same time, you have to pick your battles. |

Remember there are no boys there so who would they be flashing? It's just a style and a way to express some rebellion to wearing those butt ugly uniforms.
You may want to consider some of the no uniform girls schools. My DD went to Madeira and most girls there wore jeans, yoga pants or sweats. Much less revealing if that kind of thing bothers you. |
| At Garrison Forest they all wear shorts under the uniform, as told by students there. I haven't looked under any Holton skirts, but I'd guess that's the case there too. |
