Pencil skirt for wedding?

Anonymous
I will be going to a wedding in a few weeks. The wedding will not be super formal. Thoughts on wearing a pencil skirt and nice blouse instead of a dress? I don't want to look like I am going to work, but I also do not want to go out and buy a new dress. Is a pencil skirt too business-y?

I wouldn't.

You will look like you came from work.

No, those are work clothes. A dress is more appropriate.

Is it a plain old wool pencil skirt? Yes that screams work.
If it is lace or has something that can make it more "evening" that would be better.

At the same time, if that's all you have to wear and you don't have the money to buy something else don't bother. I promise no one will be checking out your outfit at all, unless you're in the bridal party or maybe family.

Check out Dress Barn - they are not expensive, and I've had surprisingly good luck finding dresses there. Maybe you can find something on sale or on clearance that you can afford? Do you have a friend with a similar size/style? Maybe you can borrow something for the day?

I'm going to go against the gain here. I think you could make it work. Can you wear a dressier top than just a standard button up blouse? Some thing with some details that makes it more if an evening outfit?

Unless these people are getting married at a court house, wear a dress. A pencil skirt is NOT appropriate. I don't care if other people wear one, it's not right.
I'm from NYC - the land of the black tie wedding. I've been to weddings all over the world and am shocked at people who do not dress up for such a special occasion.

I just went to a somewhat casual wedding on the West Coast. Wore this dress. Was willing to pay more but couldn't find anything that worked better. Super comfy and I paid less than $70 for the dress and had a pair of black patent shoes but saw plenty for under $50. I wasn't looking to get a deal but this was the dress that worked best

As long as the top doesn't have a collar and you wear shoes and jewelry you definitely wouldn't wear to the office, it sounds okay.

If it's bit an evening black tie wedding, I agree with the others who suggest a sparkly or other fun top, higher heels, etc and it's fine.

^^^
...it's NOT a black tie wedding....

That looks like a work dress to me as much as a pencil skirt looks like part of a work wardrobe.

Say the pencil skirt is black and OP can find a dressy, black fitted tank to wear with it and nice jewelry, it would have the effect of a dress and therefore be appropriate IMO.
