Toy storage - bits and bobs

Anonymous
I have two preschoolers (boy/girl) and feel like I do really well, in terms of toy storage/management. The one thing that I cannot get a handle on, however, are all the teeny tiny toys that get randomly brought in -- like bouncy balls, miniature My Little Ponies, fake snakes, whistles and that kind of stuff. Not to mention the tiny clothing and bits that seem to come with the "girl" toys like Calico Critters. Looking for suggestions about how to store these little things. Right now, everything is jumbled together in a couple of baskets and I guess that's OK but I feel like I'm constantly digging around to find the one tiny little purple pony or green bouncy ball that the kids REALLY NEED. Anybody have better ways of dealing with this (besides tossing stuff)?

Yep, I hate that little loose stuff too! Drives me mad.
I have a place for all of their toys except the small ones.

For example with my dd, all of her tiny little ponies are in a little pony lunch box, all of fairies in a fairy lunch box. The clothes and shoes are in the correct boxes. My DS has baskets for all. One basket for cars, one for balls, planes etc.

Now for all of the crap like odds and ends are in a plastic bin of significant size at the bottom of her closet where it will get tossed and gone through every year.

Find something with a lid.

Ikea has some good options, e.g.,:

container store clear shoe boxes. organize by type of toy - lego, playmobil, etc. they're stackable and it's easy to see what's inside.

We use IKEA Trofast with the shallowest baskets.

Are you English/Irish? I don't hear people say "bits and bobs" too often around here.

Is this terrible? I rarely buy that kind of stuff (outside of craft materials) and I often wind up throwing them away when they are not put back. I feel like it has made my kids more creative in the end. I do feel like I've wasted a lot of money, though.
